Lily - circle back on the apartments, they should be able to find something and they can save money on breakfast and perhaps a lunch/dinner or two in the apartment.

Well so far my friends have emailed the LUX HOTEL PICPUS suggested by Travelnut - it's well rated on tripadvisor and the price is below 70 Euros for a double. Their next choices will be Ibis Bastille Opera Hotel and possibly an apartment through Parisrents. I'll let you know the outcome.

While waiting for the Lux to respond, I checked with Venere and discovered their search function whichs display all the hotels available for your dates as well as the price and the ratings by Venere users. Using this function, I ended up finding Hotel Wilson and a few others which were rated well and under 70 Euros. My friends have now booked Hotel Wilson based on the price and the ratings of Venere and tripadvisor although it is in the suburbs and not centrally located. Thanks everyone for your recommendations and help with this, much appreciated and hope will be helpful for others looking for budget hotels in Paris.

Hôtel Jeanne d'Arc in the Marais is under 100 Euro and terrific if you can get in. It's very popular. We thought it was much more comfortable than Hotel Familia.

I don't know.... for such a short visit, I think it's a mistake to stay in another town. The transportation connections don't sound good (having to take train to St Lazare b/c the metro is too far away)..

Try the Timhotel website, they have hotels throughout Paris and some go for less that 100 Euros a night. We have used one of their hotels near the Louvre and it was clean, recently refurbished, and had decent sized rooms. Worth a look.

Good luck getting into the Hotel Jean D'Arc with this short of notice. Great ratings and consequently tough to book, September is nearly full as of this date.

Thanks everyone for the excellent recommedations. My friends have booked the Hotel Wilson but they are exploring all of the recommendations that have been made in case of a better deal/location/hotel, etc. Thanks for all these great ideas. I am sure that some on this site will want to bookmark this post for future reference.

So, Lily - all the best. In case of a hotel crash, consider a new one to myself as weel, but it looks good and we are willing to give it a try:
Torcy's Hotel, 58 rue Torcy, Paris, 75018, Fax: 01 46 07 27 29.
We have reserved a double deluxe suite for 52euros a night.
As you can tell by the area code it is in the 18th Arr. so thats why we are getting so much more value compared to the single digit arrondisements.

We stayed at Hotel Prince Albert - 5, rue Saint-Hyacinthe , near Louvre
and near Subway Station : Pyramides or Tuileries
http://www.abotelparis.com/abotel-pr...sentation.html

Five years ago we stayed at
MONTPENSIER
http://www.hotel-paris-montpensier.com/english/Main.htm
also near Louvre.

Both were 92 - 98 Euro , breakfast included.
