Paris Hotels

Any tips on areas to avoid in Paris as far as booking a hotel is concerned? Any preferred areas? First time travelers to Paris going in August! Thanks!!!

Most first time travelers prefer to be in the arrondissements ("districts") that have the lower numbers (1 through 8).

I've stayed in #4, which is the area known as the Marais and is very interesting, with lots of fun shops and restaurants and a good location for sites such as the Louvre, Pompidou Centre, and Notre Dame; also 5, which is the Latin Quarter, near the Sorbonne, Pantheon, Luxembourg Gardens, Notre Dame, etc.; and in the 7th, which is near the Eiffel Tower, Musee D'Orsay, Invalides (Napoleon's Tomb).

Many people here love the 6th (St. Germain). I've never stayed there, but I do enjoy the atmosphere there.

If you tell us a bit more about your interests and budget, we may be able to be more specific.

Hi melissa,

Choose 1 - 8, with 4 (hip), 5 (students) and 6&7 (no longer students) being the most popular.

The north end of the 14th, up near the 6th, is also popular.

We alsways stay at the Hotel Bonaparte, 61 Rue Bonaparte in the 6th.

You are lucky; August brings with it many reduced-price offers at good hotels. Just be sure you get a room with air-conditioning; August can be hot and sultry, and it's nice to have a refuge.

We like the 6th, 7th, and 1st, if that's any help. If you'll give us your price range you will get many suggestions for hotels in various areas.

I don't think either Jeanne d'Arc or the Grand Hotel des Balcons has AC. Melissa hasn't even stated a budget, so it's hard to advise, but I think that it's best to stick to Arrondisements 1 and 4-8 for first-timers. I don't really know if the ones Ira lists are the ones most popular according to the tourist office, I imagine 1 and 8 are also.
