Paris hotels

Hello,
Can anyone suggest a hotel in Paris given the following?

I've been a couple of times before, stayed in Latin Q and the 15th. My companions this time have never been to Paris, so for their benefit, I'd be interested in someplace more or less central, as we all prefer walking. Not much interested in museums this time, but would rather do outdoor sightseeing and wandering.

Also, since we'll be going in late August, early Sept., I'd be interested in someplace with a courtyard, or patio, someplace quiet. (I know AC is a must)

I've looked on the usual sites, TA, booking.com, hotels.com, even have YouTubed and googled some places, but thought I'd ask here also.

Adjoining rooms are a plus. Our budget is around $200US per night. An apt.hotel would be great, except I find them on the sterile side.

Thanks so much.

Well, the Latin Qtr is certainly central, did you not like it there? I wouldn't stay near the Seine, though, but some good hotels elsewhere -- like around the Pantheon, rue des Ecoles or even just a bit rue Gay Lussac. Or place Contrescarpe/rue Monge.

But if you have little interest in museums, that reduces some of the attraction of staying near the Seine, actually. Some people like the Marais, you know, you can wander around there some, I find it a bit more claustrophobic over there, but you could wander off the the east some in the 11th for a change or even up to canal St Martin. That might be a good idea for you, actually.

The problem is the request for a patio, that isn't easy. Many hotels have an interior space that might be called a courtyard but it's not a place to hang out, just a way to get windows in a building, so I don't think that's what you mean. And asking for quiet in the center of Paris isn't usually something that can be guaranteed very well. I don't understand why you need adjoining rooms, that's something parents use for children. And then you have a low budget for this wish list, of course.

Okay, this fits your wish list in all ways except the adjoining rooms bit, I have no idea if it has that and it does NOT have AC. Which is too bad as I think it's just what you want. But you can see that hotel is right at your budget.

The Hotel Suede is well within your budget and has an interior patio area where they serve breakfast (but not sure you just hang out there if that is the goal). That is a quiet area, but it's not dead central, either. Again, have no idea about connecting rooms but if I were you, I'd forget that item as hotels may not even want to do that for adults, anyway. It makes it sound like you intend to be noisy and throw parties or something.

Thank you, Christina.
We did like the Latin Quarter very much, even though it was quite crowded. I just thought we might try a new area.

The hotel-grand-ecoles looks perfect, I'll check that one out.

I'm a VERY light sleeper, hence, my interest in adjoining rooms. Believe me, at my age, I am not a partier, never was!

Thank you for your response.

nytraveler May 29th, 2016 04:06 PM

Sorry but how does having adjoining rooms help with being a light sleeper - unless you are trying to get away from a snoring companion?

How many people are you? How many rooms? And is the $200 per night for each room or are you looking for 2 connecting rooms for that?

Hi Cab,

If your budget is $200/nite per room, I can highly recommend the Hotel Bonaparte.
http://www.hotelbonaparte.fr/en/accueil#NaN

It lacks your courtyard, but you can walk around the corner to Pl St Sulpice and rest beside the fountain, or people watch at the Cafe de la Mairie.

Recently renovated and promoted to 3*, it has an elevator, breakfast room, 24 hr concierge, AC (that works) and is within 3 min walk of 2 metro lines and a whole lot of buses.

Doubles from 135 EUR

Hope this helps

Cathinjoetown May 29th, 2016 04:27 PM

Assuming your total is $400 a night, for comparison have you considered an apartment?

rosemaryoz May 29th, 2016 05:23 PM

There are two hotels with gardens/courtyards in St Germain des Pres, but both would be a bit outside your budget. Have a look at Hotel La Perle, and Hotel des Marronniers. I think Paris hotels become more expensive in Sept, as it's a more popular time after the August lull, so you will have to expect to pay a bit more then.

raincitygirl May 29th, 2016 05:33 PM

We have stayed twice at Hotel de Varennes in the 7th. Great location just a few blocks back from the Assemblee Nationale and around the corner from the Rodin museum. We walked everywhere from here but there is metro and bus service nearby as well.

It is a lovely hotel, with AC and it does have a very nice quiet courtyard you can sit in. We often stopped at the well stocked little grocery store just down the street at the end of our day, picked up some cold beer and a snack and sat in the courtyard. It's a quiet street but has a great bakery next door, the grocery store and plenty of restaurants within walking district.

I just looked on their site and you may have to go a hair above your budget but not much, they have some specials. That is assuming you meant $200.00 per room per night.

A hotel in a central location that includes a courtyard will cost quite a bit more than $200 a night. Here's a lovely hotel that fits your criteria otherwise: http://hotelabbayeparis.com/

Apartments rarely have courtyards in the sense that most people think about them. They are meant for storing trash and bicycles and for passing through to your apartment - and there won't be any outdoor furniture for "guests" to use.

Les Marronniers is a nice hotel, I've put family there and they were quite happy.
Le Residence Henri IV is near the Cluny museum, but at the end of a quiet little side street. There are regular rooms as well as apartments with kitchenettes, and adjoining rooms are possible.

If you don't find any dates available on booking sites, you could always contact the hotels directly to see if there are any cancellations.

You should like hotel des grands hommes, in the 5th, in front of the Panthéon. Don't remember if there is a courtyard,, though, I don't pay attention to that.

Cathinjoetown May 30th, 2016 04:49 AM

I rarely read about Hotel d'Angleterre anymore. It used to be quite popular and has a pretty courtyard, great location. It's on the rue Jacob.

Meant to add, Christina mentioned the Suède. I stayed there years ago, some of the front rooms have balconies and are spacious by French standards. Christina is right, there's a patio, some rooms are accessible off it.

There was also a small bar area in the lobby that did serve drinks and a small selection of sandwiches. But this was 20 years ago, may have changed. We were four travelling together, the bar was a good place to meet, plan the next day, etc.

It's in the embassy area, in fact one or two small embassies are on the same street, lots of security around even that long ago. It was a quiet street then apart from the almost daily trash pick up at around 5:00 but hard to avoid that anywhere in Paris.

I have only been the lobby of the Suède but it looks like it has not been touched in 20 years. This hotel is about as remote as anyone can be in the center of Paris yet with early morning trash pickup, it´s not really that quiet for sleeping.

There´s not even a bus line close by (except for 87 going only to the ET). I would not recommend it for anyone who did not have business at one of the nearby embassies.

Cathinjoetown May 30th, 2016 02:56 PM

Thanks for the update on the Suéde, sounds like it is more than a bit shabby as it wasn't new when I stayed there, very clean, though. I do remember walking a lot but I was much younger then of course.

Hi, I can recommend Lenox Montparnasse -- it's in the 14th but very close to 6th; on rue Delambre, very quiet street right by Blvd. Montparnasse. About 5-7 minutes from jardin du Luxembourg, has A/C, no courtyard, but a nice lounge with an honor bar! I absolutely loved this hotel, and location.

Whathello May 30th, 2016 09:40 PM

hi Cath, if you're talking about Suède rue Vanneau in the 7th, it has been refurbished.
I stayed there not long ago and liked it + perfectly calm area. A little bit excentered, contrary to Angleterre, for example, right in the middle of everything.

Calabria62 May 31st, 2016 08:37 AM

Thanks for all your replies.

Based on your comments, I'm narrowing it down.

The Suede on the 7th looks fine. Did check out Grand Hotel Ecoles, and it looks like a great possibility. But will check on Lenox Montparnasse,La Marroniers, Varennes, and Bonaparte.

I would love an apt., but given there may be 4 or 5 of us, everyone seems to want their privacy. And we will only be in Paris for 5 nights.

I wanted a courtyard or some outside space, but that's not a deal breaker, nor is the adjoining rooms idea.

Thanks again.

This hotel is in the Latin Quarter, which we liked, but you're looking to stay elsewhere, it sounds.

We liked this hotel in the 7th. There is a complete 'grocery' market next door, an ATM on the corner, Rue Cler a block or two away, Champs de Mars right across the street, Eiffel Tower view from some rooms & an easy walk to get there.

raincitygirl May 31st, 2016 10:06 AM

Calabria62, Hotel de Varennes has a lovely courtyard, with furniture to sit on. Look at the photos on their site.

Christina May 31st, 2016 11:04 AM

I stay right near the Lenox Montparnasse and wouldn't have thought of that fitting your requirements at all. As with most hotels, it really depends on the situation of your room, but that is a narrow street, although I don't think there are really restaurants or bars right near that hotel (except one that is almost right next door but doesn't cater to noisy youth or anything). There are mainly shops that close in early evening. I had an apt once for a week almost right across the street from it.

I really like the Montparnasse area but it didn't sound like what you would have considered central, I know I've seen many people complain about it being too "far out" for typical tourists, which I find perplexing, but no, you can't walk to the Seine from there (well, you can, of course, but it's about 1.25 miles). I like it for that reason. The hotel is nice, but has small rooms--there is no patio or garden. So I'm not sure what your criteria is at this point, but you need to book one of the more expensive rooms in that hotel to get any space, and if you get one overlooking the street, there will be street noise.

Your party will be four or five people. Is your $200 (178 euro)nightly budget per person, per room, or for the entire group? Clarifying that would make a difference.

Hi I recommend you try http://www.wolumba.com

Calabria62 Jun 3rd, 2016 12:54 PM

Thanks to all for your recommendations.

Yakkin....the budget is around $200US per room, not per person. (More if we end up with adjoining rooms or suite).

Edu, Tab, thanks for your input as well. I will look up your suggestions.
