paris hotel suggestions
 

Hi all...
We're going to be in Paris in mid-November and would appreciate some suggestions of hotels...preferably on a quiet side street within walking distance of some shops and cafes. Romantic and good architecture would also be nice. Any ideas? Also, which areas do you recommend? Thanks for your help.

It might be fastest to do a word search with "hotel" with the name of a neighborhood like "Latin Quarter" because there is already lots on the forum on this topic. Some people get tired of answering the same questions, so they won't respond.

If you want people to help you specifically you are going to have to give them an area. Just about all arrondissements have what you are looking for (with shop/cafes in the vicinity.) Price limitations are needed because what is cheap to some is expensive to others.

We love the Hotel des St-Peres on the Rue de Sts-Peres in the 6th. It is close to Blvd. St-Germaine. The hotel is the former home of Louis XIV's architect and is near lots of shops and cafes. The rooms are larger than most for the price in Paris - you can get a nice room within your price range. You can link to the hotel through www.esprit-de-france.com.

Just have to point out that "very romantic and beautiful" is about the last thing I would call the Tour Montparnasse. It's just a huge highrise building. And the area around it is incredibly busy and noisy - one of the last places I would want to stay in Paris.
My personal preference is the 7th arrondissement, where I normally stay in either the Hôtel Duquesne or the Hôtel de France.
As Klondike says, a search for Paris hotels will unearth a wealth of information.

I agree I would not pick Montparnasse as an area to stay. Most people like staying closer to the Seine. It's unfair to ask for suggestions without giving a price range. I'd pick the 5,6,7 arrondisements. There's a current thread called "Paris is overwhelming" that has lots of hotel information.

can you say what your budget per night is?

I have never heard of Montparnasse Tower referred to as romantic or beautiful -- however, I do stay in Montparnasse a lot and like it very much, so I agree with that. It is noisy and busy right next to the tower, but there is no need to stay there (and I wouldn't) -- Montparnasse is a large area and many parts are less noisy and less busy than where most people on this board like staying IMO. It is not that far from the Seine at all.

However, the odd thing is the hotels Clouclou suggested are not in Montparnasse, as far as I know (unless there are several by those names). The St-Paul is well-liked in St-Germain near bd St-Michel (good choice), and the St-Dominique is in many others' favorite arr., the 7th. I think they are both on side streets and close to shops/cafes.

look at hotel etoile de maillot...we have stayed there twice...quiet, a nice staff, nice neighborhood, metro stop just around the corner. it is on the edge of the 16th so you see embassy people in the local cafes, etc....they call it a b&b, but they will do room service and you have a mini-bar, etc. i think it is a 3 star and we have paid about 90usd. you have all the local retail- what you do not have are souvenir shops and touristy stuff

It's just off Rue de Rivoli and across from the Tuileries.
It is a lovely property! Quiet because it is off the main street. But you may still have a view to the park if you book a room with a balcony. (keep in mind. balconies in Paris are small)
Another PLUS..it's just around the corner from L'Ardoise....one of our favorite little bistros!

St Germain and St. Michel tend to be lively so if noise bothers you, choose a different location.

In case it might help, we've decided that we'd pay as much as $200 per night, but would love to pay less for large quality room. Thank you for your help.

Highly recommend the Hotel Minerve. From some rooms you can see Notre Dame. It's near all the tourist things and is just beautiful. Do check the web site. It's pretty reasonable as hotels in Paris go.

BTW, we couldn't get a room there for when we're going in a couple weeks so we're staying at Hotel La Sorbonne. Has anyone stayed there? At least it is a great location!

Interested to see some replies criticising mimi2000 for not quoting price range when some of the replies were equally vague, using phrases like "not too expensive" etc! I'd love to know what that means because I've just got back from there and ended up staying out of town at Villeparisis where I could commute in by train - only about 20-25 minutes to Chatelet in Paris Centre. Price 49 euros a night for 1 person with ensuite, and it was very nice.
