I stayed there about 10 years ago, so maybe it's changed but I didn't think it was that great, although not horrendous. It's about two blocks from St-Germain, just about on the corner of rue de l'Universite. I don't recall any type of cafe or bar etc being next door or even on that street (which I would have liked)--it seemed very residential to me with apt buildings next door (rather noisy, actually, if you leave your window open as you are right next to them, I could hear them talk, wash dishes, and their TV from my room) and some govt. buildings, post office and a school nearby. There is a bistro around the corner on rue de l'Universite. My room was just what I would call ok, not nice. It was basic functional 2-star, not charming at all, with some cheap touches (TV in ceiling corner, motel-like modern furniture, etc). The staff were very nice, and there was a nice breakfast room with a good breakfast (with a great pot of brewed black filtered coffee), so that was pleasant. It's not a bad location, but a little farther from the metro than I would like (about 5 blocks to St-Germain). If you're in the camp who says you don't care what a hotel is like because it's "just a place to sleep" as long as it's clean, it should be fine.
