Sorry about yet another hotel question but I have been researching for months now and have narrowed my search to Hotel Monge in the Latin Quarter. Been to Paris once and stayed at Familia. Love the Latin Quarter for sure. Going with husband and my mom this time so we'll get two rooms. Willing to pay for the best rooms at Monge since it's only a two star. Wondering if anyone has been there very recently and if they can suggest which rooms are best. Definitely want at least one room to have a small balcony...love to watch the street action. Also, is it quiet at night? Thanks Fodorites...don't know how I managed Paris the first time without you!

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Monge in July and loved it. We requested a room with balcony facing the street, and although I cannot remember the room number, we were on floor five and had no problem with street noise.

The hotel was very clean and modern with ample space for European standards. We really enjoyed having the French doors open over the street in the evenings and watching the goings on.

I have stayed at the Hôtel Residence Monge two times. I have also stayed on the fifth floor with a view over the street. I don't remember any of the rooms having a balcony. There were just tall windows that opened inward and I did just as Statia did, I opened them for the fresh air and view of the street. The view from the rooms at the back of the hotel are exceptional. They view the Arènes de Lutèce. I would recommend that you call the hotel when you make your reservation and discuss this with Julie. I have found Julie to be most helpful. Their telelphone number is: 01 43 46 87 90. Rue Monge is a busy street, so you will get some street noise. There were evenings that I left the windows open, and I still slept well. During the day the streets are very busy and of course the noise increases. Since Paris is a town that never sleeps you will also hear conversations from the street late in the evening. If I remember correctly there was a large dog in one of the shops across the street that would bark loudly when another dog entered his domain. There are a lot of dogs in Paris, watch your step.

Just a clarification regarding our balcony. We did, in fact, have a balcony that we could stand on. It was not very wide, however, so it wasn't as if we could put chairs out there. It was about 2 feet wide, so it was ample space to stand out and enjoy the view off and on.

Also, I booked Hotel Monge on line and then faxed my credit card details to Julie, as she requested. She was very prompt about responding by email to any questions we had, as well as room confirmation info.

Hi - my husband and I stayed at the Hotel Monge during the heatwave in Paris in August and were very happy there. Rooms were more spacious than I thought,very clean, ours had two windows, facing the street. Julie was very friendly and obliging and we would definitely go back there.

Were you comfortable there during the heatwave because it was airconditioned? Do they have an elevator?

The brochure I have from the Hôtel Monge says;

Pour votre confort l'hôtel est entièrement climatisé. Salle de petits déjeuners. Ascenseur.

So, I guess it is air conditiond and has an elevator.

Yes, it's air conditioned with very modern in-room units. There is also an elevator, but it's a typically small Parisian lift. It can hold two average sized people with two 22" rolling suitcases. If you have more than that, you can always send one person up at a time with luggage.

During the heatwave, the air conditioning just coped - though of course it's not like the a/c in US hotels. We were very comfortable just the same,and like Statia says there is an elevator, albeit very small,but saves carrying luggage up stairways.

I've also stayed at Residence Monge. I would caution that the room I stayed in was not very spacious but it was clean and comfortable. As an inveterate reader, I like a comfortable chair to sit in and that, alas, was lacking. But if your stay is not too long, I think you'll be fine and enjoy the Monge - it is convienent to so many things. We had a room in the back, overlooking the arena and it was quiet with a nice view.
