Paris hotel mistake??
 

Just booked Hotel Grand Hommes for week with my mother, who is 80, and am worried that the walk to the subway is too long. Looked on map but it's hard to gauge how long those blocks will feel. Should i switch to one of the owners' other hotels? Perhaps Sorbonne> Or is it silly to worry about the difference of a block or two. Her back gets sore, so she may be taking taxis anyway. thanks everyone. you're always so helpful.

The walk IN the metro can be long and with lots of stairs.

Look into bus routes and take taxis.

You can go to www.ratp.fr and put the address and mailcode into the 'beige box' and get a map that shows where the bus stops are. Lines 84 an 89 are about 1/2 block away.

The RER is about a 5-8 minute walk, 400 meters or so.

That area is rather sparse for the metro network.

I totally agree that the buses are a much better idea than the metro. The metro stations are full of stairways and long hallways. And, the bus stops get you much closer to where you're going. Even when transferring, there's much less walking involved taking buses than using the metro.

We prefer the buses to the metro, anyway. On the metro, you miss all the scenery!

It's not just the walk TO the metro, it's all the walking within, stairs, corridors, etc.

I would budget to be able to use taxis liberally. Or finding a hotel in a neighborhood like around the Sorbonne would be good too.

Even with no mobility issues, I don't like to have to take the Metro every time I leave my hotel to go anywhere.

My mom is the same age now and she can't do all of the steps and long walks inside of the metro station. So, after I discovered that it was too much for her...this was two years ago...then I switched to the bus system.
I have a small book on the bus routings, plus I've used the bus for 30-plus years anyhow. I prefer being above the ground seeing things, on route, than underground. I do use the metro when I want to get somewhere quickly. I choose my accomodations according to convenient bus lines going easily to where I need to go. Happy Travels!

If I remember correctly, the buses also tip towards the curb for easier access. Buses are much more user friendly for the handicap than the metro.
