Paris Hotel in the 6th for 1st timers
We are 2 women traveling to Paris for the 1st time in April. We’re staying for 4 nights, trying to budget under $500/night and appreciate French charm (as opposed to modern decor). Have narrowed it down to the 6th and looking at these hotels:
Hotel l’aubusson
Hotel Parc Luxembourge
Hotel de l'Abbaye
Any others we should consider?
Would appreciate your thoughts, experiences and tips, including room specifics/requests we should make and hotel promo codes that you know about.
Thanks all!

I have a friend who always stays at Hotel de l'Abbaye. Loves it and I trust his taste but I have not stayed there. If you choose Aubusson be aware that the first floor rooms are over their jazz bar. That would be a deal killer for me but I am a very light sleeper and that might not be a concern for you.
Have you looked at Hotel Relais Saint Germain or Espirit Saint Germain? These are in my fav corner of Paris and Le Comptoir which is attached to Relais St Germain is a wonderful restaurant and L'Avant Comptoir is a also a part of the group and is also delicious and lots of fun.
Good luck with your planning.

I think any of your hotels would be fine, nothing wrong with any of them and I think they suit your criteria.
I think you could also consider the Hotel Left Bank St Germain

The Relais Christine

the Recamier

As for l'Abbaye..yes the standard rooms are small but everything about the place oozes sophisticated charm. Beautifully decorated, great staff and location. I have probably stayed there at least twenty times. Will be there next week and again in December.

Another factor in picking a hotel is closeness to a Metro station as the subway is vital for getting around. Google Maps can show that convenience for each of your possible hotels. (PS: I like the 10th to the 12th arrondissements but that's just me.)

The Luxembourg Parc does not have twin beds, just so you know about that.
The Hotel d'Aubusson does not have twin beds, either.
The Hotel d'Abbeye does not have them, either.
There are single mattresses - made up to make a double bed with a divide between them - but I don't know whether the staff could separate them, due to the headboard situation.
I think you have set your sights on a budget which will not allow you to have a twin room.
I suggest The Quai Voltaire, which is in the 6th arrondissement, and will allow you a really stunning view of the Louvre, as well as twin beds.

I guess it is implied but to the OP are you sharing a room?
Agree with Southam about choosing a location with good Metro access. Another reason I love the Odeon area of the 6th but I think every thing suggested does have good access to the Metro.
Hi weekender!

We've stayed at both Hotel D'Aubusson and Relais Christine many times. Both are excellent hotels with great locations for exploring much of what you'll want to see.
Of the two, I slightly prefer D'Aubusson for charm and hotel staff. Highly recommend asking for an upper floor overlooking the courtyard if you can get it. It's a bit quieter, and try to stick around one night for the jazz session by the bar. Heavenly!

All great info! In response to a couple queries—yes, we’re American and yes, we’ll be staying in the same room.
Do French hotels have discounts available (like the US having AAA, Costco, etc.) or are the packages offered on their booking sites the best deal to be found?

IMO watch the deals. The first 6-7 times we went to Paris we took a deal on the hotel, Expedia, Orbitz, etc. Air-hotel deals. Were they good deals? Yes, great deals BUT we found out....you get what you pay for. If you are happy with the worst room in the house you’ll be OK. Also in other countries.
Booking.com seems a bit better SOMETIMES. Because they show a variety of prices, you can then choose a better room to start by paying a bit more.
We’d get to our “best deal” room and head right back up to the front desk and pay more for a better room. That is if they had any better rooms available. Often you are stuck with the crappy room you originally booked.
What we do now is look at the deals, then contact the hotel directly. Since they are not paying a third party you can often get a much better deal.
I must say that my husband is a real pro at getting a better room when you arrive.
My favorite story was when he went to the desk at 10pm and said that the room was not satisfactory. The desk clerk said that he couldn’t do anything until the general manager came in at 8am. My husband said, “I’ll wait” and sat facing the desk in his bathrobe & slippers. LOL, within 15 minutes we were moved to a lovely room.

Always contact the hotel directly for the best deal and the best info on the room, etc... don’t worry about where most Americans or Europrans precer to stay in Paris. Paris is a fantastic city regardless of where your hotel is. I love the 6th arr even if Parisians consider it “touristy”. I think most locals would be thrilled to contain the tourists in the 6th anyway and then tbeg don’t have to encounter us!

In the 6th we have stayed in the Madison, d'Aubusson, Relais St Germain, Duc de St Simon and l'Abbaye. We would return to any of them without hesitation. Each time we contacted the hotels directly for information and reservations. You should make sure the rooms available are suitable to your needs. Enjoy your trip!

You might want to check out the Hotel Pont Royal right around the corner in the 7th on the Rue du Bac. (Actually the address is Montalembert) A little bit of history and convenient to D'Orsay, Louvre etc.
Also in the hotel is L' Atelier du Joel Robuchon if you want to splurge on a special meal.

On the other hand, right near Odeon Metro station, there is a great hotel, with twin beds that suits your budget, and you get free breakfast. Exposed beams, stone, etc...

You usually get what you pay for.
Hotel Clement. Excellent location. Walking. Metro. Hotel is a 2* and the last time I stayed it had a worn look and feel. Rates appear to be lower than when we stayed there which might indicate they recognize it's getting worn.
Hotel Left Bank
I stayed there years ago as well as two year ago. Excellent location. Walking. Metro. One of the few hotels that actually has drawers and shelves. Much fresher look.
It's a choice of money vs quality. Location of both are excellent.
