Two sites to check are www.france-hotel-guide.com or www.parishotels.com to get ideas about hotels offered at various rates in the 14th district .

Thanks, Francophile... i have taken a look at those sites, but thought someone might have a favorite.

Well, this is way under $200 US dollars, so you may be looking for something a little more upscale, but the Hotel Daguerre on rue Daguerre is quite nice and in a terrific location. Rates start around $100.

Less $$ is always good. Thanks elle, I'll take a look at them.

These are hotels in the 14th I have earmarked:

Hotel Daguerre - nearest Metro Gaite, Line 13. (many good comments about this hotel but they are usually also talking about the street itself)

Hotel le Nouvel Orleans (Best Western) -
this is across the street from Metro stop Mouton Duvernet, Line 4 which runs to Gare Montparnasse and Gare du Nord. 3 blocks up is the RER-Denfert Rochereau Line B, which goes to Gare du Nord and Charles de Gaulle airport.

Hotel Delambre - between Metros Vavin (Line 4) and Edgar Quinet (Line 6). Many good comments about this hotel.

All have doubles/twins for under 120 Euro. I believe you can view them under the aforementioned websites given by francophile03. The BW is purported to have A/C.

The area looks good for a stay, with several street markets nearby, great transportation connections, and a recent thread on restaurants. While there are pockets of non-characteristic/commercial buildings, there is a lot of interesting history about the area. I will be going up the dreaded Tour Montparnasse for a Paris overlook.

I am not sure if this hotel is near the 14th but it is the hotel Abbaye- just beautiful and right under 200.

I can mentioned that there are a number of popular/favored hotels in the 6th near this area, centered around Metros Vavin or Raspail. I don't instantly recall the names b/c my budget confines me to a different category ;)

Some friends of mine always stay here (I've visited them there but have only seen the lobby)and like it very much.

Although technically in the 6th, it is right on the border of the 14th, just north of the Blvd. du Montparnasse, within a few steps of the Vavin metro station. They particularly like the breakfast buffet - 9€. Doubles from 153€.

You can bid on Priceline at the 4* level and be fairly sure of getting a hotel in the 14th, although a new hotel could always show up. See BiddingForTravel.com

Otherwise, the Sofitel Rive Gauche often has a special rate of 157 Euros per night. Go to the Sofitel.com site.

Le Meridien Montparnasse also has rates in that ballpark.

Thanks so much everyone..some of those look great... especially like the look of the Hotel Abbaye and Hotel Delambre. I've been using this site-(http://www.pariserve.tm.fr/hotel) and found it helpful if anyone else is interested.. but then you all probably know it.

Hotel Delambre -

For hotel rating by BonJourParis.com, and telephone/fax:
Hotel Delambre:
Here is another Montparnasse area hotel that has undergone recent renovations. I would be lying were I to say it is the most charming in Paris. But no one can fault the designer's taste nor its cleanliness. A single room can be snagged for about $60 per night and a super deluxe double clocks in at the $100 mark. That is, depending on the dollar and where it is it that week. There are 30 rooms but again no air-conditioning.
