Paris hotel- Do you recommend Eiffell tower area?
 

Hi, i found some good reports on a hotel in paris called the "Ideal Hotel" It is cheap and a lot of people have spoke highly of it. It is right near the Eiffel Tower. Is this a good area to stay in? Is it convenient to a lot of other things to see. We are only there for 2 days and want to make the most of it.

A few thoughts from a local about staying near the Eiffel Tower :

Paris hasn't been built around the ET. Therefore, the area around the tower is not the most central central, if it is what you want, but Paris is a compact city.

It's a mostly residential, upmarket and relatively quiet part of Paris. It is not always pretty, especially west of the ET along the river, where the city has been heavily redevelopped during the 60's and 70's.

Remember also that any property with "Eiffel" in its name should be primarily understood as "hotel marketing " and by no means an indication of real proximity, let alone a guarantee of the "romantic Eiffel tower view from your room".

An indication of the street this hotel is on would be useful to help you further.

I've never heard of it. Who spoke highly of it? - people you personally know or did you read it somewhere, if so where. Check Tripadvisor.com for the best selection of hotel reviews, they are usually quite accurate.

I would not stay in that area. I much prefer the 5th/6th or the Marais (3rd/4th). And if you read this forum much that is also the preferred areas for the majority of posters - there is a reason for that. Those areas are the most central, have the "best" ambiance and a good selection of eateries. Since you mentioned the word "cheap" I will assume the cost of things is important to you. If that's true you will find it more economical to stay in the Latin Quarter/Marais districts.

I can personally recommend the following 1,2 and 3 star hotels: St Andre des Arts (6th), Hotel St Jacques (5th), Hotel Minerve (5th). I did stay in one hotel in the 7th near the Eiffel Tower, the Hotel Champs des Mars, and I liked the hotel but wasn't crazy about the area as a place to stay, and anyhow now that hotel is so popular I doublt you'd be able to get a reservation. I can't recommend any hotels in the Marais but I stayed there in an apartment in March and I loved the area.

I stayed in this area and agree with the other posters' comments. To answer your question "Is this a good area to stay in?" the answer is yes. To answer your question "Is it convenient to a lot of other things to see." the answer is no. I would suggest the Latin quarter if time is limited. If you do a search in this forum for Paris hotels you'll gets heaps of info.

Everywhere in Paris is accessible to everywhere else, thanks to effective public transportation and the relatively small size and high density of the city. So you can get a hotel anywhere you want. You don't have to be close to the Eiffel Tower just to visit it.

My wife and I stayed at TimHotel Tour Eiffel in April this year. The hotel is located right next to the metro station Duiplex and it only took us like 10 minutes to walk over to the park in front of the Eiffel tower. It was not a bad area to stay in and it didn't take us long to get to e.g. the Opera area by using the metro. There were restaurants and different shops in the hotel area as well.

After once staying in the 16th which is also close to the Eiffel Tower we have decided that it's just too much of a hassle to take the metro to get to where we end up hanging around: the 4th through 6th districts. Sure you can take the metro and buses everywhere you need to go. But if you have the opportunity to step out from your hotel and actually be in the same areas you would take the public transportation to get to, why not? As said already you can stay elsewhere and travel to see the Eiffel Tower anytime. I mean staying nearby how many times would you plan on visiting it? There are other things more interesting to see.

Certainly if you like to spend your time in a specific neighborhood, it's somewhat more convenient to find accommodations there. But how many consecutive days does anyone visit the Eiffel Tower?

This hotel is on Avenue Emile Zola, quite a distance south of the Eiffel Tower. "Quite near" is a big exaggeration.

There are plenty of hotels in that price range with better access to restaurants, sights and transportation.
