paris hotel decision
My family will be traveling to Paris the first week of June for the first time. Because there will be 5 people going, we will need 2 rooms, therefore are trying to keep costs down. I have read several things about Familia and Minerve both positive and negative, but what about Hotel le Regent, Hotel des grandes Ecoles, Hotel Muguet. Will we need to have air conditioning? How close are these hotels to metro? thanks for any information!

The Muguet has received generally good reviews on this forum in the past.
So has the Grandes Ecoles. I don't recall what I have seen about the others. I don't think any hotel in Paris is all that far from a metro line.
The Muguet has one advantage in that 8 or more bus lines are within easy walking distance. I much prefer the bus to the Metro anyhow. You are above ground and can see the sights as you ride. Also, the Metro is often relatively unpleasent to ride on, in my opinion. When in Paris, I never use it when I can take the bus and get reasonably close to my destination.

As for air conditioning, I doubt if the temperatures will demand it in early June. But, that is not the whole story.
If you have air conditioning, you can keep the windows closed. That helps keep the room quiet. Also, rain is frequent in Paris and most of the hotel rooms can be a little stuffy if you have to keep the windows closed because of the rain and the humidity.
I think it is a toss up, but my own preference is for the ac.

If you decide on the Muguet, get going on your reservations as they fill up early! It's a good hotel, has AC and is within easy walking distance to two metro stops.

We stayed at Hotel de Grandes Ecoles just before Christmas and found it to be quiet, clean, helpful staff, with a lift, one block from Cardinal Lemoine subway station in the 5th arr (good location). 690 Francs for a larger room (100 less for smaller room)

A less costly suggestion might be to rent an apartment for that time period. Many places will rent short-term. I'm doing that when I return in March. There will only be three of us, but I simply get a LOT more room for the money. I'm spending about $80. a night for our apartment. I'd probably have to stay at the Ritz (for mega bucks) to get the kind of room I'm getting in an apartment!

Jennifer
