Paris-Hotel de L'abbaye
 

Hi,

We have been struggling to find a Parisian hotel for our first visit that will satisfy our entire party. Its 5 of us (me, wife, 2 kids - 1 and 3, and mother in law).

We *think* we like the Hotel de L'Abbaye in the 6th. Its a bit more than we had hoped to spend, but it seems to have gotten really good reviews on sites like tripadvisor.com. We really like that its close to the Luxembourg Gardens (mainly for the kids).

We are assuming we will get two rooms. I suppose its possible we could get a Duplex Suite, but I have not been able to find much information on these online (I guess our next move would be to call and ask for it!).

Can anyone let me know whether they have stayed there? And your experiences?

Also, what is the best way to book at this hotel? I cannot seem to find them on venere.com, parishotels.com, orbitz, expedia, etc.

I have stayed there several times but not lately because the rates have been raised beyond my budget. There is a lovely garden where breakfast is served and a small charming bar area. It's a quiet location that you enter throuigh a cobblestione courtyard. The bigger room were at top or garden level. I always stayed overlooking the garden(the least expensive at that time)

Originally, we had said 200USD/night/room. But, having read so many good things about this place, we are willing to pay more.

Just got off phone with them. They have adjoining standard rooms for 195Euro/room/night, which is roughly 250USD/room/night.

If you are happy with that price, many people on this forum have recommended the hotel.

We still have not booked. Still waiting for opinions, but I am seeing very positive things when searching thru this forum.

I'm sure you will love it. Though the hotel is quiet, you are steps away from the hustle and bustle. As I type this I glance at the little cream color tray that is in every room. They gave me one and it is the perfect size to keep by my pc.

I've no experience personally, but one review on this website mentioned they felt extremely uncomfortable staying there with their son -- too quiet, and the servers seemed disapproving of him in the serene breakfast room. Just something to keep in mind.

I always felt the rates are pretty high here, but the hotel is so popular seems like you have to book at least a few months in advance. That's not a comforting thing to know about the disapproving servers. Must make the guest feel pretty unwelcomed.

I have stayed twice at the de L'Abbaye --- and will certainly stay again. It is very near the Gardens; rooms are comfortable; we always found the staff to be very accomodating and pleasant. Wonderful breakfast in the morning with pan au chocolat; croissants; coffee and/or chocolate. If you're there when it's warm, you can sit outside in the garden area. In any case, you will not be disappointed. They are also very helpful when it comes to recommending places for dinner. Metro stop is a block and a half.

I have stayed at l'abbaye..it is a lovely hotel.

It is a very popular hotel with a great following. You may not be able to get a reservation. I think your first consideration would be to check to see if that is even possible!!

Well, if you inquire about 6 months or so in advance you're pretty certain to get a reservation.

Btw, Caseylowry, have you considered other hotels?

Hotel Luxembourg Parc is right across the street from the Luxembourg Gardens and has gotten all excellent comments on tripadvisor.com plus it's a bit cheaper than the Abbaye. Site is: www.luxembourg-paris-hotel.com

I'm a big fan of the Abbaye and have stayed there at least half a dozen times. More recently we've rented apartments, but if I wanted a hotel, I'd definitely choose this one. As is often the case in Parisian hotels, the standard rooms are quite small, but they are pretty and comfortable. The common areas are lovely and divided into several small rooms, one with a fireplace, another with a large-screen TV. There is a breakfast room that opens onto an attractive bricked courtyard where you can have breakfast or drinks in good weather.

The location is ideal IMO...it's just off rue de Rennes on a quiet street and is set back behind an entry courtyard, but you can walk to the bustling center of St-Germain in under 5 minutes, as well as to the Luxembourg Gardens.

The staff has always been more than accommodating and I can't believe they would disapprove of a child who wasn't acting up and annoying other guests, but I have to admit I don't actually recall seeing many small children during my stays.

Interesting comments about children. I can certainly agree that at a quiet location, be it a hotel or restaraunt, that I cannot stand mis-behaving children.

But, with infants, a tantrum is going to happen. As long as we took them out of the area, would that bbe alright? Or would we be totally ostracized after that?

Looking at the Luxembourg Parc, it does look really nice and certainly the tripadvisor reviews were as good (if not better) than L'Abbaye.

However, the rooms were more expensive! I have not yet check thru the discount sites but figured I would mention it.

L'Abbaye was 195 Euro per our phone call (including breakfast). The Luxembourg Parc web site shows 200-245 for a double (without breakfast which is 17 E/person).
