My husband and I will be traveling to Paris for two days in September for a surprise anniversary trip, then onto Italy for a week and a half. I would like to find a hotel in Paris that is somewhat near all of the following (although I am not sure if this is even possible): Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Seine, Notre Dame and Pantheon.

There is no hotel that is truly "near" all those places, as they are strung out along the Seine, but it really doesn't matter as public transportation in Paris is fantastic and walking is such fun. That said, the 6th arrondissement would probably best satisfy this criterion.

Probably more important criteria are budget and type of hotel.

The 1st and 6th districts are more or less close to all of the above except for the Eiffel Tower. Hotel Brighton in the 1st is supposedly a very nice hotel if you request a Tuileries view room and ask for one on the 5th floor for the Seine, Tuileries, and Eiffel Tower views.

Lots of recommendations here for the 6th district hotels.

But also it depends on what your hotel rate range is to really make suggestions to you.

As long as you are near a metro station, you will be fine. We stayed at Villa Alesandra (near the Champes Elysee (sp) the first time, Courtyard Marriott in Neuille (sp) and Relais Christine in St. Germaine. The best location for us was in St. Germaine. To see the Eiffel Tower was easy. We took the metro only a few stops. We walked from there to Nepoleon's tomb, Luxemborg, Latin Quarter walking tour and then to Pantheon and then back to hotel. We spent a couple days on the Ile. St. Louis and St.Cite. That was a great location but Villa Alesandra was good because we were so close to Champes Elysee yet close to metro. There are many wonderful references by people here who will help you. That is how we found out about Relais Christine. Expensive though.

All of the hotels sounds excellent, however, maybe it would help if I narrow down the search a bit. I am looking to stay in the range of no more than 130 Euro per night, and I don't even have two full days to enjoy Paris, however, need to be very close or within walking/subway distance to the Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysee, Notre Dame, and possibly, if time permits the Pantheon. Does this help narrow the search? Also, my French is very rusty, so I'm worried that if I call a hotel directly Ira, will they be able to speak English via phone - your choice sounds excellent too!

In response to your email, my preference would be to have a hotel that is not too noisy and not on a busy street since we will need to get a lot of rest our first night since we most likely will not sleep on the flight to Paris. I like the idea of being near the attractions, but tucked away off a very busy street.

I recommend the Hotel de l'Arcade. We loved it. The rooms are quite spacious for the price, and the location is excellent. Best of all, the people are friendly and helpful. Have a wonderful time!

We've stayed at the Hotel Des Arenes on 2 separate visits. It's in a great location in the Latin Quarter, very near the Pantheon. There are lots of really neat bistros near by and the Metro is 1 block away. Ask for a room at the back, preferably on the top floor. The rooms at the back overlook Roman ruins that were just discovered this century. During the day it's fun to watch kids play soccer and the older folks play bocce in the ruins. The back rooms are very quiet. The price falls into your price range. Don't go for the breakfast. There are lots of neat coffee places nearby. Rue Moufftard is just around the corner and it's fun to stroll along it. There's a great market there (forget which day) and it has quite a night life. We've stayed in other areas of Paris, and we like this area the best.

There are probably dozens of hotels that match your criteria, but even though I've made dozens of trips to Paris I haven't stayed in dozens of hotels. I favor either the Hotel de France on the Boulevard de la Tour Maubourg or the Hotel Duquesne-Eiffel. Both are in the 7me, and I like both of them because the neighborhood is fairly lively, but it's quiet at night, and it's easy to walk or metro or bus to anything I want to see. I wouldn't describe either of them as "tucked away."

I'm sure you'll get lots of other good suggestions, too.

take a look at the 9th. it's a bit quieter. great shopping w/ in a close walk.

but w/ the paris metro everywhere is within only a few minutes at most.

nicoleg, do not hesitate to contact the Hotel Bonaparte by telephone. I stayed there last month and all of the desk staff speaks English.

Do consider this hotel. It is a plain, 2* property with an excellent location and friendly, helpful staff.

Hotel du Sejour was adorable for couples. The owners (husband and wife) speak English , French, Spanish and I think Italian.

It's close to Notre Dame, Centre Pompidou, Louvre. The Eiffel Tower is a walk from these places but a short metro ride.

43 Euros a night for a double (bed for two)

I loved it!
