Paris hotel & internet access?
 

I know this is the board to ask this particular question. My husband and I hope to go to Paris this November ( after the electon!) but we really need to have high speed internet access in the hotel room. Before everyone yells at us, please understand that we run a small business and need to be available should there be any emergencies. This is the only way we will get to Paris so please help me with recommendations for a nice (dare I ask for Charming and romantic?) Hotel with internet access in the room. IF we can do that for $200 to $250 per night, we would have a very happy Anniversary. Thanks for your help!

That's interesting because someone asked this exact same question just a couple months ago, I believe -- almost exact same thing.

I'll admit I don't understand why being accessible to your business requires high-speed internet access, I'll admit, as you don't need that for email to simply be available. Maybe if you explained why you need high-speed access for some use, someone else could address that in particular.


Since you are running a business, I assume you have a wifi card in your laptop in which case, you can have access all over the place -- lots of hotels have that, nowadays, as well as public places, stores, cafes, etc. Again, I don't know why you'd need it in your room per se, that will be much harder to find. It may not be so charming and romantic for your husband to stay glued to a computer in your bedroom, either.

The person who asked the question a few months ago finally decided on the Hotel Westminster in Paris and booked it through Hotels.com. I can't find the earlier thread. I assume the original poster might need to receive or send large attachments, and thus the high-speed requirement.

I stayed recently at Le Meridien Montparnasse and it had high-speed Internet access available in the room for 23 Euros per day (or 60 Euro cents per minute). It was comfortable, spacious, modern, attractive, and clean, but possibly not charming or romantic.

I haven't stayed there, but I was very comfortable at their lower-priced sister hotel, Hotel Valadon. It is clean and fresh, but more modern than charming. The Latour Marbourg looks more classic in decor.

Yesterday, I was out and about on VRBO apartments in paris, and quite of few of them offer inhouse internet service.
One apartment on the Ile de Cite was VERY posh and well...romantic.

Message: I knew you guys would come through for me! FYI- the reason we need access is more than just email. Our business is data processing and my husband is the programmer/system designer. IF the staff runs into a problem and he has to write/test new programs, speed can be important. Its a sad fact, but being self-employed has its down sides! Suzie C is correct about some apartments offering high speed access, but be sure to ascertain whether it is dial up DSL or cable modem (better) and if it is included in the rental price. (I do undestand why you would need this, BTW) We recently stayed in an apartment that had wireless cable modem acesss, and once we figured out how to program our browser it was great. The place we rented was well located in a quiet neighborhood convenient to two Metro stops with lots of shops (cafe, bakery, grovery, etc) in easy walking distance. The same owner lists a place on Ile St. Luis that looks good, too. They were great to deal with, live in the US but have Paris agent to handle keys. www.paris-vacation-rental.com

Again, thanks to all of you for your great suggestions and sites to check. Thanks especially for understanding that some of us can only travel with reliable access to work. I posed this same question to the travel talk column on the Washington Post and got a pretty snotty reply. I know quite a few people who are in the same situation as we are and think its a valid question. For all you business/leisure travelers out there -I'll post when we return and let you know how it all worked out!

Most hotels have access and i would bet that the two Starbucks in Paris also have access. Just make sure when you are making reservations that the hotel has access.

As my husband found out when he was researching this issue, there's access and then there's access. Some hotels have Internet access only in their lobbies and charge for connection time; others do the same in the rooms, while still others have wi-fi. It makes a big difference when you need to transfer large data files.

Underhill is so right about this! Many places advertise internet access, but what they actually have is a pay as you go kiosk in the lobby, often with no printer and not always in service. Too, advertised in-room connections are often called "high speed" but that is a relative term. Since it is important to you, I'd recommend that you verify both in-room availbility and connection speed before finalizing a booking. In your price range there should be little problem finding an acceptable place. Bonne chance!

Hi--I am so *not* computer savvy but I have heard that data on wi fi connections can be easily accessed by different spyware programs, so I would be careful if the info being transferred is sensitive.

I remember when everyone said that computers were going to set us free!

And they do...free to check in as often as possible.

The Hotel Latour-Maubourg (www.latourmaubourg.com) gives you free WiFi-Internet Access in the Deluxe-Rooms and in the Lobby/Breakfastroom.
The connection speed is 6 Mbit/s!

A (2euro/half-hour) internet-terminal is also present, but is added to your bill (pay by credit card)
