Paris hotel
 

I will be in Paris for 2 nights in October. I'm not sure which area to stay? I hoped not to pay more than 150.00 us per night plus taxes. I'm mid 20's and so is my friend. Any suggestions?

I would think the around around the Bastille would be a good location for two friends in their mid 20s. Lots of streets with friendly cafes and clubs. I haven't stayed in any hotels there, so have no first hand recommendations, but your price range sounds reasonable for the area.

For $150 you can easily stay in the Latin Quarter and really be in the middle of thinngs. I don't find Bastille to be that.

The Latin Quarter is definitely recommended for your age group.
And the Grandes Ecoles is my recommendation for a place to stay in that area.

The area around Oberkampf has been labeled as "developing, trendy, happening"...etc - that would be between Republique and Bastille...

Yes, despite the presence of the university, I've never found the Latin Quarter to have a young vibe. We've stayed there twice (once at the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles, the hotel Howard mentions) and once you're off the Boulevard St Michel and away from the very touristy areas rues de la Harpe and Huchette, it's almost sedate. Although the Place de Contrescarpe has some nice cafes and a few good bars.

But maybe we're making assumptions about what you're looking for. . . why don't you tell us more about what you hope to see and do, your likes and dislikes?

I'm not in my 20s, but in January found the location and ambience of the Hotel Delavigne to be convenient, safe, and pretty. It is in the 6th, near the Odeon metro stop. Some double rooms (one double bed) are quite small; ask for a twin room, those are larger. The beds are adjoining. We had room #24 and liked it very much.

Stayed near Oberkampf-Republique last October and while interesting, it is out of the way. Lots of travel needed.

The Latin Quarter definitely has plenty of appeal for 20- and 30-somethings, with the Sorbonne planted right in its middle. There will be plenty of American college students in its cafes ordering hamburgers avec frites!!!
The Abbatial St. Germain is a little under $150 a night, has compact but very nice rooms with marble bathrooms and air conditioning. I think the California St. Germain, also very nice, is about $150 p/night as well.
