Paris hostel versus inexpensive hotel, like Familia or Grand Ecoles
I would like to know if the hostel le Fauconnier is really such a step down from some of the low budget hotels in the Latin Quarter? We are a family of 4 adults and are looking for reasonable rates, as we need 2 rooms. I understand that double rooms are available in that hostel. Any advice?

Those two hotels aren't really low budget ones, at least not what I'd compare as even close to a hostel in style or price. I think you could compare a hostel more to a 1* hotel.
I've heard that hostel organization (they own three in the Marais, I think) is very nice, but you can't reserve rooms there if you are over age 30, according to their web site -- and then it must be a quad. Maybe that's just their internet reservation rules. I'm not saying they wouldn't allow you in, sure perhaps you can't reserve ahead. They do focus on young people and I've heard it can be difficult to get in because they often have large school groups.
Their rooms are not really that cheap, being about 30-35 euro PER PERSON in a double room.

Try Hotel esmeralda
they have large rooms in their Annex which would probably accomodate 4 adults. More like a two room apartment, with fridge
Price was 105 Euros . . . Location is fantastic, right across from Notre Dame on te Left Bank, the building is cool . . . throw the windows open and feel like your in Paris

Jeanneboca, I am considering the same thing with my 2 children in April. I am seriously considering take a dorm room for the 3 of us at one of the hostels. It should average around $60/night, it would be safe, breakfast is usually included, the hostels I'm considering are in busy areas, near the Metro, some have internet access (so I don't have to drag the kids out to one) and since there are so many of us I'm thinking we'll be able to get a dorm room to ourselves.
Here's the ones I'm considering:
Young & Happy Youth Hostel (rue Mouffetard in the 5th)
http://www.youngandhappy.fr/
Hotel Coulaincourt Square (Montmartre)
http://www.caulaincourt.com/
Le Village Hostel (Montmartre)
http://www.villagehostel.fr/
I'm leaning heavily toward the last one.
Other than that, I'm also considering the Grand Hotel Jeanne d'arc in the Marais. A triple is 108 euro & a quad is 125 euro. Normally, the website is:
www.hoteljeannedarc.com
but I'm having trouble accessing that today. It takes you directly to a www.parishotels.com page, so I'll just give you that one instead:

I stayed here last April and really enjoyed it - very nice staff!!
