Paris gtg in October?

I was thinking it might be fun to have a gtg in Paris when DH and I are there this October. I've been to gtg's in WDC, Philly, NY and Boston, but never overseas. I was thinking October 13 for dinner because I've been talking to another Fodorite who will be there then as well, but nothing is set in stone for either of us yet. It's hard to make plans this far in advance, but I'm trying!

Anyone in Paris, interested and available that night/week?

TPAYT Jun 27th, 2016 09:56 AM

Darn, we were there on Oct. 13th last year.......This year we'll be there in mid Sept. If anyone is interested.

kwren Jun 27th, 2016 10:38 AM

Couldn't make it a full year TPAYT? ;)
Sorry to miss you!

AGM_Cape_Cod Jun 27th, 2016 11:02 AM

We will be in Paris on Sep 14 & 15th TPAYT. Sorry to miss you kwren.

maitaitom Jun 27th, 2016 11:09 AM

We'll miss you by a week.

((H))

ceeast1 Jun 27th, 2016 12:06 PM

Sounds like a lovely idea. My dh and I will be there for all of October and the first week of November. Any date would be fine. We have ideas but no firm plans for day trips, etc.

kwren Jun 27th, 2016 12:16 PM

maitaitomi - what are your dates?

Whathello Jun 27th, 2016 12:30 PM

Hello
I'm always ok for a GTG.
I'm most of tuesdays in Paris - so 11 oct would be fine for me, a thursday is rare for me but can happen.
Make this thread pop up at least every month !

kwren Jun 27th, 2016 01:20 PM

sounds good what hello!

Mathieu Jun 27th, 2016 02:58 PM

Same here - will miss you by a week.

Just working on possibly leading a small, very fun group on a very personal culinary tour of the City of Light; lots of little out of the way bistros and restaurants helmed by rising chefs, local bars with live music and tasty nibbles, cooking schools, wine and cheese events, markets, a visit to Epernay and several 'pick-what-you-want' fun things to do in Paris. Exciting !

Traviata Jun 27th, 2016 04:25 PM

DH and I will be there, arriving October 6th...we'd love to be part of a GTG......!!

kwren Jun 27th, 2016 04:57 PM

I'm arriving Monday the 10th.

TPAYT Jun 28th, 2016 03:04 PM

Kwren-----yes, not quite a year.
My mantra----"Never a year shall pass without going to Paris!"
These are the rules I live by.

TPAYT Jun 28th, 2016 03:10 PM

AGM-Cape-Cod ------We'll be in Paris from 9/13 to 9/18.
If you are interested, we are planning to lunch at Le Comptoir on Wed. 9/14 , after reading all your excellent reports.

We have passed this restaurant so many times but never could get in----is it possible to make a reservation?

Anyone else interested?

Belinda Jun 28th, 2016 03:36 PM

Matthieu, any chance of getting the names of your little out of the way bistros and bars? I'll share my list if you share yours. Are you by any chance on FB?

TPAYT Jun 29th, 2016 04:41 PM

A bit of a misquote----

"My wife says, a year shall not pass without going to Paris." From the book "Aging Well" by George E. Vaillant.

MDH showed me this quote and now has to deal with it!

Jim_Tardio Jun 30th, 2016 09:02 AM

I will be there on Oct. 13th. If it comes together please post a meeting place.

kwren Jun 30th, 2016 02:48 PM

OK Jim - that is a tentative 4 of us right now. I'll keep tabs on it.
Figuring out a place to meet shouldn't be too hard.

fuzzbucket Jul 1st, 2016 01:38 AM

If you mean Le Comptoir that's near Metro Odeon, there are no reservations available except for the gourmet tasting menu at dinner. Reservations for that are hard to come by, guests staying at the hotel that owns the restaurant have first dibs.

I eat here on a regular basis - for lunch, you arrive by noon, the place fills up fast, then you stand in line until enough people leave. This won't be a good place for more than 4 people, I'm afraid, since you can't count on more than that leaving at once.

The seafood restaurant next door is owned by the same outfit, but is standing room only, behind the plastic curtain.

But there are several nice restaurants right in this same area - Hibou, Marco Polo, Les Editeurs...might be more than some are willing to pay - about 50 EU for lunch with wine, maybe more.

kwren Oct 8th, 2016 08:49 AM

I'm back and know our plans now. If anyone is interested in a get together on either Tuesday October 11th or Friday October 14 we would love to get together. It would be nice if anyone had an idea of where to meet because I really don't, although we get there Monday so if I see a restaurant I could ask if they take reservations. If it's a small group we could probably find some cafe or brasserie and just meet there as well. Let's start with the date and see if people are interested in either of those days and take it from there. Paris here we come!

Traviata Oct 9th, 2016 07:22 AM

kwren......DH and I are here...arrived a few days ago....will hope to meet and watch for a posting....

WoinParis Oct 9th, 2016 07:27 AM

Have fun. I like gtg but missed the last ones. That week is nok for me.

kwren Oct 9th, 2016 08:11 AM

Hi traviata! I'm waiting for our flight out of washington right now and can't wait to get there. Seems like not many people are in Paris right now, but we'd love to meet up!

StCirq Oct 9th, 2016 08:16 AM

We're there on the 12th and then again on the 21st and 22nd, but not on your dates.

kwren Oct 9th, 2016 09:52 AM

I would have loved to meet you stcirq.

Latraviata - the latest update is 4 of us are available on Friday Oct 14. Does that work for you two?

Traviata Oct 10th, 2016 12:00 AM

kwren......yes, we can do Friday, or/and, St. Cirq on the 12th, Wednesday....We are in the 5th....where are all of you?..will save both nights.....drinks, dinner, just say...

StCirq Oct 10th, 2016 02:07 AM

We're in Montparnasse, right opposite the train station. We get in late afternoon by train and have to get an early start the next day to CDG for a flight to Budapest, so maybe just drinks, as we will have had 7 hours of train travel that day and a long day ahead on the 13th.

Have you been to Le Ciel in the Tour Montparnasse? That's a nice place for a drink. Not trying to make this convenient just for us, but I suspect we'll be pooped.

kwren Oct 10th, 2016 05:10 AM

StCirq - were going there tonight!

Anyone else for Friday Oct 14 dinner? ceeast1? You still out there?

Sarastro Oct 10th, 2016 06:47 AM

Mrs Sarastro and myself are available on Friday and would like to join you. I have, however, lost track of the restaurant you are suggesting.

Traviata Oct 10th, 2016 09:46 AM

What about Petit Pontoise for lunch or dinner on Friday???? Reservations will be a must...

kwren Oct 11th, 2016 04:12 AM

I'm going to start a new thread with the information we have so far entitled Paris GTG Friday October 14th. I made a tentative reservation at the restaurant suggested above but have to get confirmation. I have made it for 8 people so please go to the other thread and let me know if you can make it so I can adjust the reservation if it goes thru. The restaurant is the Petit pontoise as suggested and it looks nice. I made it at 7 o'clock. I will post back on the other post when I get confirmation. I'm sure it's not too late for other people to join in so let me know! We have 8 people so far but please confirm on the Paris GTG Friday October 14th.

Sarastro Oct 11th, 2016 06:50 AM

Here is the link to kwren´s new thread. It is not tagged France so it won´t appear in links dedicated to France only:

Thanks for tagging it Sarastro. Can i blame it on jetlag, wine or most likely both!

StCirq - we didn't end up going to Montparnasse on Monday because it was raining. We skipped it tonight because we were hoping we could meet you tomorrow night ( Wednesday October 12). Are you still interested in going? We won't be there for dinner but we're going to try to get there around 7 or a bit after. I think it's a champagne bar at the top, is that correct, or are there a few places? We would have to figure out how to find each other.

Anyone else who would like to join us let me know here! We will need to know how many seats to save

StCirq Oct 11th, 2016 10:45 AM

Hey, kwren!

Sure, we'll meet you there, as we could literally crawl there from our hotel in a few minutes, and we'd like to take advantage of being so close to have a drink there. I think the champagne bar is a bit separate from the rest of the place, but honestly I can't remember - it's been about 7 years since we were last there. I do know that the whole top level is for drinks and dinner, and the champagne bar is off to the side a bit from the dining area, but not "separate." Forgive me if my memory is a bit faulty. At any rate, once you find yourself on the floor where there are drinks and dinner, it's all there.

My profile has a very recent picture of me on it - perhaps that will help. My husband is about 5' 10" with longish dark hair, very slim. My email is StCirq at aol dot com. You can try that, but I don't know if we'll be able to get to email until about 6 pm tomorrow (or early morning time here in France). If you email me I'll send you my cell phone numer in France if that helps. We could probably be there 7-7:30. FWIW we've never had much of a problem finding people we didn't know. Somehow it seems to work out.

Hope to see you tomorrow!

kwren Oct 11th, 2016 11:18 AM

StCirq, I emailed you.

kwren Oct 13th, 2016 12:55 AM

Great meeting you StCirq and sharing such a wonderful view! Have a great trip to Budapest!
