Paris going out solo

Hi guys! thank you for responding my message.
I'm a 22 to year old spending two months in Paris this summer. I'm very excited, but, i don't know anyone in the city...so that kind of makes me nervous.
So...restaurants don't make me nervous and day trips...i'm fine(actually is better because i can plan my own thing) doing alone.
But the thing is i really want to go out at night to bars and clubs, etc.
is going alone to a bar in Paris weird? or to a night club? do girls do it?
I just don't want to sit there and be surrounded by creeps or being stared at.
By the way....do you guys happen to know any expat groups that meet up and etc?

So all the tips will be welcomed and very much appreciated.
by the way,
any tip you can give me i'll appreciate it.

Thank you guys.

Oh and it would be lovely if you could check my freshly written blog about Paris. I'll write about my experiences there.

Take some of the Discover walks. They're free (be sure to tip the host!) and you will meet people! We did. We liked Le Marais and Latin Quarter walks.
Le Marais has a lot of casual eateries. The Jewish area especially…
Check out the friendly Descartes bar in the Latin Quarter. It's a young and casual place for snacks and drinks.

If the girl just wants to have fun I suggest starting at le Huchette http://www.caveaudelahuchette.fr/. Go to the cellar for music, dance, and guys.

Also have a look at my daughter's blog http://inaplace.wordpress.com/.

MariaAlejandraB:

Your post about going solo in Paris brought to mind a recent article in the New York Times Sunday Travel section about just that. Perhaps you saw it. If not, it might give you some useful pointers:

The link above blocks the full article. The link below should provide the full text and photos.

Just go the the MeetUp website. There are loads of Meet-Up groups in Paris, including several for expats. Here is one example:

Since you are there for two full months you should be able to meet people to go places with.

All the suggestions here are good... online, blogs, local events, etc. Plus once you're there pick up the local entertainment guides. I think going to hear live music (for example) is easier solo than going into a nightclub.

hey, good luck, I also think you'll meet people and get the lay of the land somewhat better when there. And it's hard to say without knowing exactly what you are talking about. I travel alone a lot, but never (not even when young enough to care) have gone to a club alone anywhere, in any city. I would be very surprised if it were typical for young women in Paris to go out to clubs alone, unless they were professionals, if you know what I mean. Besides, if they lived there, they'd have friends to go with. I'm sure some might go alone, knowing they were going to meet up with people there.

The closest I came to going to a "club" was going to le Caveau de la Huchette with a few friends. This isn't techno, etc., though, it's various types of jazz or swing, but some people do dance to the kind where you would. I don't remember seeing any women there alone. That isn't really a typical club like you are thinking, though, given the music. Of course, you could go in and stand around and pretend you were with someone who just stepped away, but it's very crowded and you are not likely to have anywhere to sit.

Now bars are a different story, and I think you have to not think about bars as you do back home. In Paris, cafes serve as bars, and you can go there alone, I do all the time. Some skew a lot younger and a lot of young people go there. I often stay in Montparnasse and there are several bars on bd Montparnasse between bd Raspail and rue de Rennes which are popular with young people. There are also a lot of cafes with young people (partly because Sorbonne students live around there, several dorms) in place Contrescarpe in the Latin Qtr, and just on the parvis in front of the Sorbonne facing bd St Michel. But place Contrescarpe is a good place you could try (it's at the top of rue Mouffetard). For more bars/dance clubs, there are a lot of hot spots in the Bastille or Oberkampf areas, and a lot of young people in some of the cafes over there, also.

And certainly if you were traveling on business or just staying in a hotel, it would be okay to go to the hotel bar alone.

So I suggest you try to meet people, go to some of the cafes popular with younger crowds and try to get a feel for it. I would not suggest you go out to some nightclub alone, but for all I know, lots of young women do it. If you've never done that in your life, anywhere, I wouldn't start in a foreign city where you don't know the area or people that well. Because those clubs tend to start and run very late, for one thing, and the metro closes fairly early. If you were staying right near one, you could maybe scope it out and check it out, and then leave if uncomfortable, but if you are making a special trip to go there alone, that's another story. And if you are talking the popular clubs, you have to dress right and hope you get past the bouncer.

here's an article that will give you an idea of the Parisian clubs http://goparis.about.com/od/parisbar...Nightclubs.htm
