Paris - end of April or early May to avoid rain?
 

My husband and I are planning our first trip to Paris. We can't seem to decide between leaving L.A. on 4/20 or 5/4. I'm concerned that we'll encounter rain if we go in April though two weeks probably doesn't make that much difference, or does it?

Sorry, I could not resist. I don't think you can count on the weather to determine your travel dates. Rather...

...I suggest you take a look at a calendar of exhibits/events happening in Paris and see if there is anything special happening that you want to see/do that may determine your dates.

Although not ideal, Paris in the rain is still a wonderful place to be. Take an umbrella, have some ideas of things to do when it rains, and enjoy your trip.

Been there in late March when it was beautiful and when it sleeted.

Been there in June when it was hotter then hell and when I wore a raincoat/scarves/gloves every day.

You're all absolutely right. It's very difficult to predict. Look at what's happening right now. I live in southern Cal and it's 80 degrees during the day in early Jan. Two weeks difference in departure dates is so small, it's not like we're comparing going to Paris in December vs April or May.

I will decide based on price then. We do get better fares leaving on 4/20 than 5/4. And we'll be prepared for the unexpected weather-wise. :]

We were there for 8 days in mid April 2011 and it was quite warm with incredible blue skies every day.

We live on the East Coast of US. Have had 90 degree days in April and frost in May. No way to predict. Have been in Paris in all season, and the unpredictable Paris weather always reminds us of back home (the city doesn't but the weather sure does). Only difference--a heck of a lot less snow.

So go with whatever works for your calendar needs. If it's any help, we've always thought that the gray buildings and gray stone streets somehow make the rain look much more artistic in Paris. :)

If you are Paris for any length of time - more than 4 or 5 days it is very probably that you will encounter rain. People do not melt in in the rain. Unless you are planning countryside hikes - a little rain shouldn;t be a problem. NEVER go to europe at any time of year without a sturdy folding umbrella - except for southern Spain in midsummer you will most likely need it.
