Paris - eating
Ok, I know this is terrible but I am a really picky eater ...but the food I like, I absolutely love. My favorite food in the entire world is fillet of beef with bernaise sauce which is wonderful going to paris....what restaurants are great for it?

you'll find that at virtually any cafe. just check the menu posted outside the door - order it medium unless you want to wrestle the darn thing on the plate while you cut it. We found great little places just down the blvd from the pantheon and also about two blocks off the seine - between Notre Dame and Ile de la Cite (I think that is the one with the cathedral). It was a little place with outdoor seating, tons of trees and little white lights in the trees - absolutely delightful! may have been on Rue st Paul??

No, this place was about 3 blocks from the Pantheon down towards the Seine. I can't remember the exact metro stop it was near - we usually used Maubert Mutualite and it wasn't that one...It was not on one of the islands.

There are probably hundreds of places in Paris that can serve that well. Why don't you say where you are going to be, as I don't think I'd travel way across town for something like that myself when there will probably be good restaurants around your hotel.

Elaine, my daughter and I ate dinner at that restaurant on Christmas Eve, '89; it was mentioned in NYT the week before as being open on the Eve, and the place was filled with Americans! I've tried to find it since, but think it no longer exists? I couldn't remember exactly where it was; has another restaurant taken its place?

Baligirl, I loved mine from Bofinger in the Marais near the Bastille. They serve it with grilled tomatoes and green beans. Mmmmm.

I loved your food pictures! Thanks for the link. I looked at them while eating a healthy bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, and now I want some beef with Roquefort sauce instead! I've taken pictures of the menu chalkboards (I love the french penmanship and it helps me remember what I ate) but never of the actual food. What a great idea. I'm going to try it on my next rrip. Do you try to play it cool and take the picture when no one is looking, or just snap away? What are the reactions of the waiters/ other diners? I have an Elph, so I think I could be pretty low key, but it would be hard not to dig right in to the food when it arrives.:) |

Hi, Elaine... there still is a Restaurant Paul :-) It's right next to Le Caveau du Palais. We have never eaten at Restaurant Paul, but meant to. We made a reservation, and I guess the person I talked to didn't understand my French, as we got there, and the restaurant was closed. The owner of the restaurant next door told us that Restaurant Paul is always closed on Mondays, but she invited us to eat at her restaurant, telling us it's the same family -- she was his mother. Anyway, since then, we've eaten at Le Caveau, as we liked it so much, but we have yet to eat at Restaurant Paul.

I try to play it cool and take the picture. With my "seasoned" experience of food picture taking, all it takes is about 2 shots per dish. Since I am a tourist, and act like a tourist, I'm also excused for being a tourist. I try not to make a big deal out of it and it all works well : ) By taking a picture of your food, it does delay your immediate consumption, but it will be soooo worthwhile when you're home and you still get to see what you ate. I came back from Paris about 2 weeks ago, and I'm still looking at my 'beef with roquefort sauce'. That lasting impression is surely lasting............... |

You have inspired me! What a great way to remember the names of the wines we drink, too. I always try to remember to write them down after the meal, but usually forget. Maybe the fact that I just had a bottle of wine has something to do with my memory lapse... |
I googled Restaurant Paul and found a rave review on it , in French, as of October 2004

I love the idea of taking pictures of menus! Thank you. I have been trying to do research on menus since I am such a picky eater and they are hard to find! I have read through the superthread for restaurants with menus posted but if anyone has others, i would love the links! Thanks!

Baligirl, I found <u>Bistros of Paris</u> by the Hamburgers to be very helpful in regards to the types of dishes served in certain restaurants. It won't give you a completely listing but it will have several listings. Also, there is a guide in the back that gives listings of the best places for, say, Boeuf Bourguignon or Tarte Tatin or Coq au Vin.
