Paris: Doesn't anyone eat in the 9th?
 

It seems that everyone stays and eats on the Left Bank. But I am staying in the 9th
--alone for part of the trip. Other than
16 Haussmann & Chartier do any of
the resident Fodorite Francophiles have
any pros (OR cons) re cafes, restaurants and brasseries. Pomze? Merci in advance.

There are a lot of small good restaurants around Notre Dame de Lorette (but don't expect anyone to speak english exept at the dreadfull (in local's opinion) Bouillon Chartier)
And yes, No one on this board seem to go there, i once recommended some and got the following answer 'we didn't go there, it was too cheap to be good'

There is a thread called "An Index of Paris Restaurants: Alphabetic and by Arrondissement," which lists restaurants that have been reviewed on the site since Jan 2006. There are 10 for the 9th.

We had stayed in the 9th and have found numerous restaurants that are worth a return visit. Carte Blanche has become our favorite. Auberge de Clou, Charlain, Olympia, Dell Orto, Sizin, Au Petit Riche, Chez Jean, ,La Fiacre are a few you may enjoy. Our favorite bakery is Delmontel if you happen to be staying near rue des Martyrs. There is also a new restaurant called Spring that we are going to try next trip.

There are a lot of places to eat at Rue du Faubourg Montmartre and on Les Grands Boulevards. Laidback named some.

In addition:
At Place Pigalle et Place Clichy you will find a Leon du Bruxelles, a reataurant chain specialising on mussels and fries (moules frites), a fine and moderate prized meal if you like this seafood.

There are some kosher snack bars on Rue du Faubourg Montmartre.

There is a brasserie on Rue Lafayette, named Au General Lafayette, famous for its art nouveau decor, its choice of beers ant its cuisine auvergnate - restaurant gourmand, as they put it.

We love a place in the passage Jeoffrey called Valentines for lunch. there is a place across the street on Hausmann, I can't recall the name. It has a train sign which was also very good. Lunch in the cafeterias of both the big department stores is always good too.

Our son was staying in the 9th and we just happened into a little brasserie right across from the McDonalds at the Metro stop: Cadet

- had a lot of Italian on the menu. Was a very pleasant surprise, inexpensive, excellent food with very friendly staff (let us order lunch, like at 11:30 which is like a sacrilege!) We found that area to be teeming with eateries and "real" people.

liver last wk @ L'Absinthe ...as only the French can do. Cannot figure out
how to translate it other than foie is liver. Does anyone know? And also
has anyone dined at Pomze (reasonable at 33e) which is an apple-themed, somewhat touted restaurant?

yeah, I've stayed in the 9th and eaten there, but I'm not the kind of person to keep lists of restaurants and only go to places others recommend, etc. I don't plan things that much, I just go to places when I'm in the neighborhood and they look decent and have the kind of menu and prices I want. I think people obsess over this stuff too much. I especially wouldn't worry about a simple cafe.

There are lots of restaurants around Sq de la Trinite, rues Fontaine and ND de Lorette and around place Toudouze (several good Indian restaurants there), and I've enjoyed several of them. There are cafes more along ND de Lorette, than the other places I named. I don't like Chartier, I sure wouldn't make any special point to go there.

If you want some names of places I have gone for a nice dinner at moderate price (ie, 30-35 euro per person), I have liked Bistro des Deux Theatres at 18 rue Blanche and Auberge et Cie on rue Clauzel.

Never heard of Pomze.

To update your post, Auberge et Cie is no longer there, but the spot has been taken over by Le Charlain. I might also add that Bistro des Deux Theatres is very popular as are most of Willy Dorr's chain,e.g., Bistro de Breteuil.

We went to the New Morning jazz club in the 10th, does that count?

We've also enjoyed Bistro des deux Theatres, where there is a moderately priced prix fixe menu that includes beverages (aperetif, wine, coffee). Au General LaFayette is a great casual place any time of the day or night that's very comfortable (lively at night) with an extensive menu and reasonable prices.

We really enjoyed Chez Jean. The prix fixe menus are a real bargain, and the food is exceptional for the prices. We considered this a very fine dining experience in this price range.

Also very nice are Au Petit Riche and Grand Cafe Capucines (gorgeous interior, bargain prix fixe, especially at lunch).

And, Cafe de la Paix is SO romantic and beautiful!

Brasserie Mollard is terrific for the tiled interior and seafood platters, or just a drink for a look at the spectacular decor.

We stayed in the 9th on our last trip and loved it.
Do you like duck? Then you might want to try Le Petit Canard in the 9th. It's located at 19 Rue Henry Monnier.
