Paris discount passes
 

We will be staying in Paris the last week in December, Wonder if it is possible to buy a discount pass for museums, metro, etc. Any advise for making our stay more p,wasn't and inexpensive would be appreciated.

Google is your friend. Do some hunting around for free things to do etc.


Best places to eat on a budget are bistros and order the plat du jour. also, think about having bigger meal out for lunch rather than dinner where you can often get a reasonable prix fixe (formulae) for 2 or 3 courses with maybe a coffee for 12€. Order plain tap water (une carafe d'eau, SIL vous plait) and skip ordering Coke or ant similar soft drink which are expensive and small.


Eat in some meals if you are staying in an apartment, get a roasted chicken from a street market, along with some potatoes and a baguette for dinner if you don't want to cook. Make your own breakfast, pack sandwiches for lunch.

As far as museum pass, it makes sense money wise if you plan on going to lots of museums. You'll need to price it out

You can buy a carnet of 10 metro tickets for 13.70€ ( as opposed to 1.70€ each ride) and they can be shared, so 2 people can get 5 rides. Be sure to validate the tickets before going on metro or bus and keep the ticket till you exit the station completely. There are weekly, unlimited passes but they run Mon till Sun midnight, so depending on your arrival, it may or may not work for you.

In addition to the above advice, Notre Dame gives a free tour Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoon. A small donation to the church would be appreciated.

If you're planning a Seine boat ride, Vedettes-du-Pont-Neuf is about the best of them and offers discount tickets from their web site.

Paris Greeters is a volunteer organization where you can have a Parisian give you a guided tour of specific areas.

There are some free church concerts. Buy a copy of Pariscope when you arrive to see the weekly offerings.

The cemeteries are works of art with the beautiful tombstones. Try Pere Lachaise which is huge or Montparnasse, a smaller version.

Gardens are free and there are lots of them in Paris, both small and large.

City of Paris museums are free except for special exhibits.

The museum pass isn't really a discount unless you went to maybe 3 or more a day, it is expensive IMO. People don't usually get it to save money. In December, lines shouldn't be an issue, anyway.

You are going at one of the most expensive times of the year, actually, although that mainly affects hotel prices.

If not buying a Carte Oragne be sure to buy carnets of metro tickets - 10 at a time and they can be shared by anyone - 10 carnet tickets = the cost of about six sinle metro tickets if bought separately.

Paris is very walkable if you are walkable!

Yes I relapse at times from Navigo Decouverte - Monday to Sunday I think so must comport with the days you are there and seems to be a great deal if riding the metro a lot (or buses which are neat because you can see Paris on the way.

One money savings tip is to beware of crowds at big metro stations - carry nothing in your back pocket or day pack that is valuable - be especially careful entering turnstiles - at times folks try to enter with you as they may not have a ticket and thus squueze up but they also may be pickpockets.

Is your trip adults only? If children are going, the museums are free for them. Keep that in mind when purchasing the museum passes. We used them and found them a great help (cost and time).
