Paris Day Trip via TGV under 2 hours?

We returned from a week in Paris last night and had planned to do a day-trip to Nancy to see all the great Art Nouveau.

However, we decided to scratch that plan. Here's why:

There are 2 trains- the TGV (super fast, takes 1 1/2 hours) and the regular train (takes about 5 hours). Obviously the TGV makes a great day trip EXCEPT that: 1) it would have cost about $400 for the two of us (using TGV both ways) and 2) you have to book ahead if you want to get the good train times b/c it fills up.

In short- we did not want to go to Nancy "$400 worth" and, in any event, we left it to the last minute and didn't have a good selection of trains.

That said, I'm sure Nancy makes a lovely (and reasonable/do-able) day trip if you have the cash and the proper planning.

Strasbourg in the Alsace is great and the fast train is fun, but it is a very full day. Reims for a tour of Veuve Cliqout is lovely. Chartres is also a less demanding but very nice option. The cathedrals in all 3 are amongst the best.

Our personal "collection" is to visit all of the great cathedrals of France....makes for an interesting twist to collect great memories!
