Paris Bus
 

I understand there is a special number bus that travels through the city, passing many of the big sights along the way. Anyone know what number it is? I heard Justine on "Lonely Planet" mention it on one of her shows. We have been to Paris several times and would like to take this loop. Thanks

I don't know the number, but Rick Steves recommends numbers in his books. What I did was just look at a nearby bus stop map and hop on if it was convenient for me. The bus is very easy to use.

It's 17 - but the bus stop signs say "Balabus."

I believe it is the #69 which you get on at the Eiffel Tower.

Bus #69 runs east-west between the Eiffel Tower and Pere Lachaise Cemetery by way of rue Cler, the Louve, and the Marais. Bus #24 runs east west along the Seine riverbank from Gare St. Lazare to Madeleine, Notre-Dame, and Louvre.

If you're not there on a Sunday afternoon, the 69 is a truly lovely route that runs regularly. Great in the day or evening hours.

#69 - East/West, Eiffel Tower to Père Lachaise via rue Cler, quai d'Orsay, Louvre, Marais

#87 - East/West, Eiffel Tower, rue Cler, St Sulpice, Lux Gardens, St Germain, Marais, Bastille

#29 - from Gare St Lazare to the Bastille, runs on smaller streets

#72 - follows the right bank from Hotel de Ville west, with views of the Eiffel Tower

Suzanne is right as the number that Rick Steves suggests, I just checked my old book.

It sounds great and I can get on near my Apartment rental.

the Balabus sounds neat but we are only going in October.

Here's a circular city tour passing many points of interest, which for ease of explanation we are starting at Opera.

Walk down the left side of the boulevard to rue du Quatre September and get on the 29. Get off at Bastille and board the 69; or, get off at the Place des Vosges, walk down through the center exit to the corner, go left and board the 69 there.

The 69 goes to the Champ de Mars, and is the best of the routes. You’ll pass the Hotel de Ville, Louvre, Musee d’Orsay and Invalides.

Walk past the Eiffel Tower to the boulevard, take a right and catch the 42 on the next street, which will take you back to Opera. You’ll be going down the Champs Elysses, past the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais, through the Place de la Concorde and past the Madeline.

Or, catch the 82 [direction Neuilly-Hopital American] and get off at Porte Maillot. Then walk to the corner, go right and onto the 73. That will take you around the Arc d'Triomphe and down the Champs-Elysees. Get off at the Rond-Pont and onto the 42.

Another convenient bus is #96. I do not know its one end but it runs from Gare Montparnasse, down Rue de Rennes, passing close to Place St Sulpice, down Blvd St Germain pass Place St Michel, Notre Dame,Chatelet, down Rue du Rivoli - I took it to BHV - it stops almost in front of the shop.

Any idea how expensive the buses are? I am a student and can't afford pricey tourism.

don't forget you can get the boat down the seine from the eifel tower to notre Dame - great way of saving the feet!
