I am looking for budget hotels in Paris.

*under 100 euros/night (WAY UNDER, if possible)
*private bathroom is a must
*arrondissements 1-7 (5th & 6th pref.)
*2 people, one double bed

Try the hotel Cardinal Rive Gauche, in the 5th, a 3 star hotel that have affordalbe rates for the area: aroung 90/100€ for a double room with private bathroom!
The hotel has really a good location...but you seem to know this area as you prefer to stay there...

I picked this recommendation up from a French newsletter I subscribe to. It's near the Luxembourg Gardens and has rates that go for 62 euros/2 pp. It might be worth looking into.

I just spent my weekend at Hotel Tiquetonne and I can recommend this hotel whole-heartedly for the budget category. I paid 50 euros a night. The good reviews I've seen in guidebooks and on the net are well-deserved. Noise could indeed be a problem -- it depends on your tolerance level. I found it just fine.

This is what I had to say about it in the report I'm working on:

"It's just a little north of Les Halles, and its location near r. St.-Denis (with sex shops, etc.) added to the illicit and decadent thrill of being in Paris for the long weekend. The location is excellent, and the room was clean and comfortable. Noise could have been a problem, but I slept very well."

By the way, 50 is the rate for a double, which I asked for.

I think that it helps if you're able to speak French, though I dealt with them in English on the phone. When I checked in, I used my rudimentary French as the woman tending to the desk didn't seem to be able to communicate in English. But another woman had to explain to me in English what to do if I came back after midnight.

Curfew at 3am in the morning, I think. (I was out until 2 the first night.)

I can't be picky at 50 euros....

It's also very close to the Les Halles/Chatelet stops where a lot of lines stop, and you can switch there for line 4 (2 stops, I think).

I've been by Tiquetonne and thought it looked like a good budget choice, also. The location is fine, it's right near one of those covered passages (which is why I was there, actually). It's also shown on www.eurocheapo.com and that's a good resource to check out anyway.

I don't think that Tiquetonne comes up here very often as most from Fodors don't have a budget as low as this one. So it's not for everyone. But if you've low expectations, I think at 50 euros, it will more than exceed your expectations. It was better than what I expected and definitely better than Hotel de Lille Pelican for which I paid 56 euros (?) in September.

It's an obvious comment to make, but people shouldn't stay at a budget hotel expecting 3-star (or even 2-star) amenities -- officially I think it has 1 star.

111op, looking forward to your report. I'm curious if the hotel has towels (and what quality), soap, shampoo, a phone in the room, a TV, and 24-hour service - it sounds like some of these are missing. Also, do you think a solo woman would be comfortable in that area?

Hi Will, I'll post the link to my report when it's done (hoping for tomorrow). Thanks for the interest. I don't really say much about the hotel, so I'll answer your questions here.

I had a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the street.

I think that there was a phone in my room, but I don't know for sure as I didn't use it.

Soap, yes; shampoo, no. But these days I bring my own soap. I buy my bath lotion in a store that hands out free samples, which I then happily take on my trips to use.

No TV.

I think that they told me the desk is tended until midnight. After that, there's something you need to press to get in (basically, to open the front door, and anyone can do this, so this could be a safety concern). Obviously I won't announce the method here on the net. As I mentioned, I was out until 2 one night, so I used this method. I think that I asked them while they were explaining this to me if the method would work all night. She said until 3am, I believe. I don't know what'd happen if one is truly a night owl. I've been known to be out past 3, but I figured that I'll try to get home a little earlier this time. :-)

Towels -- Since I got a double, I had two sets of towels (each set had two towels). The smaller one, surprisingly, has the name of the hotel. They're not luxurious but perfectly adequate.

There's an elevator.

As for r. St-Denis, I think that this is pretty safe (despite the sex shops). Unless you're out really late, there shouldn't be problems. The hotel is just a very short block north of Etienne-Marcel and steps away from r. St.-Denis (for those with a map).

I noticed that there're rooms as cheap as 30 euros -- but I don't know what those are like. Singles, no doubt, and probably shared bath (which is 6 euros extra, I think).

It's about2 or 3 blockss due north of the Louvre. We found it on a booking site.

Closer to the top end of your budget (but still within it) is the Hotel du College de France, a 3-star hotel in the 5th. Their website is at http://www.hotel-collegedefrance.com/accueil-us.html

FYI, I was checking Fodors.com Paris hotels section. Hotel Tiquetonne is listed, with a 4.3 rating.

<Just off the Montorgueil market and a short hoof from Les Halles (and the slightly seedy rue St-Denis), this is one of the least expensive hotels in the city center. The rooms aren't much to look at, nor do they offer amenities, but they're always clean and some are downright spacious. Book on one of the top two floors facing the quiet, pedestrian rue Tiquetonne, not the loud, car-strangled rue Turbigo. 45 rooms, 33 with bath. Some pets allowed; no a/c, no room TVs. AE, MC, V.
