Paris Bound

We are planning our 6 night trip to Paris for May 2009. Does anyone know of the Jay's Paris Hotel, rankd #1 in Tripadivsor? I have been in contact with them. They seem very accomodating, and are offering a great rate on one of their suites.

Any information on that or any other recommended hotels would be great.

brandonmd Dec 14th, 2008 12:08 PM

?

Cathinjoetown Dec 14th, 2008 12:44 PM

I don't know this hotel--it looks great on the web site and the TripAdvisor reviews are excellent.

It's out of my price range and in an area where I've only stayed once when I wanted fast access to La Defense, but didn't want to stay out at La Defense.

You would be in a beautiful neighborhood.

Travelnut Dec 14th, 2008 01:51 PM

Have you seen this...?

brandonmd Dec 14th, 2008 02:19 PM

I think the reviews some it up! Awesome! They reduced there rates quoted on their website by 90 EUR per night, and are including a continental breakfast......

annhig Dec 14th, 2008 02:46 PM

mmmm - so are you booking this, brandonmd?

I note that this is your first post - you do know that advertising isn't allowed, don't you?

dooo let us know how you get on.

regards, ann

Fodorite018 Dec 14th, 2008 03:14 PM

Hmmm, almost all of those reviews on TripAdvisor are from people who had never posted anything, and the only thing on their profiles are reviews for this one hotel. Advertising perhaps? LOL...yes, just a bit too obvious.

Cathinjoetown Dec 14th, 2008 03:21 PM

God, you guys are good. I fell hook, line and sinker.

brandonmd Dec 14th, 2008 05:00 PM

Who said I was advertising? I was just asking... I think that's rude that you were even insinuating that.

Apres_Londee Dec 14th, 2008 07:09 PM

For 500 euro a night you could do a lot better than that place.

WillTravel Dec 14th, 2008 07:20 PM

brandonmd, no one says you are advertising. Just that the reviewers on TripAdvisor fit a suspicious profile - that of reviewers who have reported on this one hotel exclusively, and who by the way are also unanimously positive.

icithecat Dec 14th, 2008 08:09 PM

If you had hung around this forum as long as I have, you would know that a first post endorsing a place is anathema. By Monday the Fodor's police will have blocked your isp and burned down your building.
Been nice knowing you.

avalon Dec 15th, 2008 02:07 AM

What a suspicious bunch on this post. The poor man was just asking for opinions on a place. If he were advertising he'd at least have posted a link. The hotel pictures on the Tripadvisor site look great. I find the 16th a bit too quiet for my tastes.

nytraveler Dec 15th, 2008 03:43 AM

The 16th may be a great place to live but IMHO a tourist probably wants to be closer to the center. Also, those tripadvisor reviews do look suspicious - and that's a lot of money for a hotel none of us have heard of.

Ruby99 Dec 15th, 2008 04:19 AM

I went to the hotel's website and other than the rooms being large, I don't see anything worth paying 500 Euros or more per night... If I had that amount of money to spend, I'd stay elsewhere for sure...

avalon Dec 15th, 2008 04:20 AM

If you look at all the reviews there are 4 or 5 negative ones. One thing that was said in one of them , there is no elevator. At that price I wouldn't want to have to walk up 4 flights of stairs at the end of a long day.

Dukey Dec 15th, 2008 05:05 AM

Please OBEY THE RULES:

Your first post either asks whether or not it is OK to wear sneakers in Europe or you have to rave about one of those repeatedly-topped-by-the-author trip reports

Then, your SECOND post has to ask if France is really BETTER than Italy

For your third post, you should definitely ask about whether or not they accept Dollars in London

For your fourth post, you should ask if "hubby" has to wear a coat and tie when visiting St. Peters in Vatican City

Do all that and everyone will think you are just like them and THEN you can ask about hotels, OK?

Michel_Paris Dec 15th, 2008 06:14 AM

branonmd,

Welcome to Fodors.

To explain a bit...what you will need to know is that there have been several instances of people joining the Forums, strictly to promote their hotel/travel agency/etc. Being wise, these people often will come across as fellow travellers who have found this great hotel, just like home, cheap, super location, tell themn Bobby Joe sent you...and then you see this person doing the same thing on other sites...and then real travellers comment on how it is NOT the best,etc..

So, being the internet, there is a certain amount of skepticism required.

So, question to you...is htis your first visit? What other hotels have you looked at? Why do you want to stay in the 16th? You could get some very nice hotels closer to the Center of Paris....What are your needs?

Tell us about your trip plans?

We're not being rude...it's just that the world is not always as it seems. There are unscrupulous people out there.

avalon Dec 15th, 2008 07:58 AM

Dukey, you just made my day!

sf7307 Dec 15th, 2008 08:28 AM

To add to Dukey's list, which is a riot....For your fifth post, you will ask for help with an itinerary that includes England, Scotland, all of France, all of Italy and Greece, but oh, you only have eight days, two of which are for traveling to and from home... :-)

brandonmd Dec 15th, 2008 08:47 AM

I suppose this may not be the best place to get information. In fact, I am shocked that a source such as Fodors would allow these types of responses.

brandonmd Dec 15th, 2008 09:09 AM

I was reading an old post from a Newman Pareker. They recommended the St. Vincent and Lumen hotels? Was he advertising?

TRSW Dec 15th, 2008 09:21 AM

brandonmd,

I for one don't think you were advertising because you asked for other recommendations. It's just some people here are a bit skeptical of others. I can't help you though due to the fact that Jay's is WAY out of my price range.

As for Newman Parker, he/she was not advertising either. He/she was just wasting everybodys time and could not keep thier stories straight. I will top a thread for you so you can see what I mean. It is called something like
'Paris Hotel Choices! WOW!!!!'

Tom

PS I hope you get some positive feedback and welcome to Fodors.

Michel_Paris Dec 15th, 2008 09:23 AM

Brandonmd,

It can be frustrating here for a new poster, because of the "culture" that every forum has.

Why not go about this from another tack? What are your needs? Perhaps, ignoring Tripadvisor, there is a better one for you.

Location wise, it is not bad. But at that price range, you will have other choices, in other locations that could be closer to some of the sites you will want to see.

You have not stated our criteria for a hotel. Is it location, price, amenities,etc.. By giving us these, we can then offer choices and comparisons.

I'm not sure I'd just pick whatever hotel is #1 on any site, since my needs may not match whoever was reviewing that hotel.

Cathinjoetown Dec 15th, 2008 09:51 AM

Brandon,

I was obviously not at all skeptical as I was the first person to answer your post.

After taking a more careful look at the TripAdvisor reports, many are so over the top that they do invite skepticism.

Back to the hotel, you are getting some good feedback--particularly the no elevator comment. And, if you want to look beyond Jay's Hotel, you've had several offers for advice but people are looking to hear more from you about your likes and dislikes.

Mainhattengirl Dec 15th, 2008 10:07 AM

I am really new to this Forum and the only thing that struck me is what if the OP really did want to know and is not advertising. Do you guys feel bad for the insinuations and sarcasm thrown out. If it was me, it would certainly put me off ever coming back here and asking for help. Is there a certain amount of posts someone has to have on here before they are trusted or what? Everyone has to have a first post. I don't know, it just seemed kind of unfriendly.

brandonmd Dec 15th, 2008 11:51 AM

I agree. I will pass on this site.

brandonmd Dec 15th, 2008 03:31 PM

We would like to stay in a central location near museums, cafes, and restaurants. 300 EUR max per night would be good. A neighborhood with character, not so much business-like.

sf7307 Dec 15th, 2008 03:35 PM

Brandonmd, this will get you many more replies. Given the way this thread has gone, however, it might be more fruitful (and really, I'm trying to be helpful) to start a whole new one with a heading such as "Need Paris hotel recommendation - no more than 300E per night"

GoSox Dec 15th, 2008 04:07 PM

My favorite arrondisements are the 5th and the 6th. I have not seen it in a few years but Hotel de Fleurie has a perfect location. You can walk the whole city from there.

Cathinjoetown Dec 15th, 2008 07:50 PM

These three hotels are around your price range--Relais Christine is higher but you might inquire about special rates by speaking with them directly and mentioning you will be staying 6 nights.

Have a look on their web sites. The hotels are on the Left Bank, walking distance to many museums, Notre Dame, etc.
