Paris: Book, Stamp and Postcard Markets

Love to nose around markets and streets looking for this kind of stuff. Not expecting to grab any great bargains, but you never know what you might find. Prefer smaller places with a more favorable ratio of shoppers to pickpockets!

Found a brief blurb on the market below. Any rants, raves or alternatives? Tips on how to avoid getting taken advantage of would be appreciated.

Marché aux Cartes Postales Anciennes -
Specialising in old postcards, this market is open on Wednesday and Thursday at 09:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 18:30.

Marché St-Germain, 3 ter rue Mabillon

Degas: I'm in a similar search. I also love to find small etchings, vintage postcards, etc. This trip I'm looking more toward 30's jewelery, maybe 50's modern. Fun, funk, and affordable. But with the current Euro, is anything "affordable" in Paris? Do you, or any other reader, have any "in's" regarding vintage linens or antique silver? I am hoping to find, again, small ornate pieces. Key words: easy to pack. I am looking for small shops or smaller markets. Also, would very much like to find an artist market: local or regional artists selling fine crafts, i.e. handmade jewelery, paintings, prints, etc.
Thanks,
Ant Bee

In the 9th off Boulevard Montmartre between the Richelieu Drouot and Grand Boulevard metro stops are a few of the belle epoque covered shopping arcades: Jouffroy, Panoramas and Verdeau. They have some little shops devoted to antique stamps, books, postcards, coins etc. There's even a shop for walking canes. It would be really fun on a rainy day because they are covered.

Good idea, but take the Metro to Le Peletier. Go to the corner and south on Rue du Faubourg Monmartre for a block and a half. Then into Passage Verdeau and follow it through Passage Jeoffroy to the Passage de Panoramas. Right inside, La Creperie serves mouth watering ice cream treats. One shop further down has a big selection of vintage postcards.

I don't think there are any bargains at all in Paris these days. Between the low value of the dollar and the fact that Paris is a high-end city with high rents for shop owners, etc., you just can't expect to find bargains there.

There are bargains galore, though, still, in the provinces, but you have to be willing to really get out into the wilds of France to find them - NOT Provence or the places all British and American tourists go, but small towns and villages that host antique and brocante fairs.

They exist, but you really have to know what you're doing to find them. Note that I'm not offering further information.

Thanks for all the inputs.

I'm not a serious collector of much of anything except hard knocks. Like to look and every once in a while dust off the cleverly hidden wallet and actually buy something inexpensive, usually under 20E! I haggle a bit in a nice way, but know going in that most likely I'm over-paying.

antbee, I'm still a novice and have no special insight into what you are looking for. good luck in your search and please post what you find out.
