Paris Apt
Hello all,
I just booked an apt with Paris Perfect for next winter - the Pomerol, in the 7thE on Rue Cler. I noticed in an earlier post that Scarlett had stayed there and while the apt was good, she described the building as "shabby". What does that mean, exactly? Would it be safe>
The apt looked so nice on the website I assumed that the building overall would be okay, too. If anyone has any info on that particular apartment or the building, please advise. It is located on the corner on Rue Cler and rue de grenelle.
(I've just joined this forum - what great info - I've been lurking for months (okay, years).

While awaiting Scarlet's impressions of this particular building:
Paris apartment buildings usually fall into one of two categories 1) Wholly owned by companies, as investment property 2) Owned apartment by apartment by individuals. In the latter case, the "common areas" of the building, facade, roof, hallways, elevators, plumbing an electricity outside apartments, etc., are collectively owned by all of the apartment owners. Any renovation or repair above a modest fixed amount must be approved by a vote of the owners in annual meeting, and owners pay foe work in the common areas according to the size of their apartments. Of course, work is prioritized (the roof, for example, is more important than the condition of the paint or the floors in hallways). If very expensive work is done, it sometimes is paid for over a period of years. All of this -- and in some cases a majority of frugal owners -- may produce long delays in renovation of common areas. So yes, many Paris apartment buildings at times during their histories, do look "shabby." This is (usually) separate from whether they're "safe." I doubt Paris Perfect would be listing an apartment in a building that wasn't safe.

Thanks for the info. Since this is my first time renting an apt, I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm grateful for the reassurance! I was able to look up Scarlett's trip report and her info on the apt. sounds fine.

We have stayed in several Paris Perfect apartments and have seen all but the one called Pinot. Believe me the common areas in Pomerol are much better than the Champagne apartment building common areas which we have stayed several times. It is exactly as Dave in Paris has mentioned. The owners have to agree on improvements and then prioritize. This is exactly what happened in Champagne's case. First they did the roof, then the facade and now they are doing the interior common areas. If Scarlet had seen Champagne's common areas she may never have taken the elevator to the apartment. We are looking forward to the renovations on our return trip in the fall. You can rest assured that the owners and their staff want you to have a lovely vacation and they are very helpful. Pomerol is a very compact apartmant but has lots of charm and you will enjoy the 7th arrondisement. If you are there on a Thurs or Sat morning try and go to the roving market on Ave Saxe. It is one of our favorites.

We have reserved Champagne for a week, beginning August 11. That was the only one [of the smaller apts avaiableback in January!]. Other than Citadines St. Germain, this is the only vacation apt. we have ever rented. I was a bit nervous but Madelyn and Phillipe, the owners, have been great. My biggest worry is arriving from CDG in time to meet the keeper of the keys that evening. Hope the interior revovation will be completed by then. Can't wait for that ET view at night.

Let us know how it is weather wise in the apartment in Aug. We are always traveling after Sept 15th to Nov 1 and sometimes the middle of March until about the 1st week of May. Also since you will be there before us let us know how the renovations are coming on the building. When we were there in April the facade was being done and they had put in a new digicode and were working on prep work in the common areas. I would think they would be finished by Aug. We have never had any problem meeting someone for the keys but we always arrive in the morning. Don't forget to let them know all your flights and times. This is very helpful in arranging entry to the apartment. Even if the renovation to the common areas is not complete the apartment will be great. We have stayed in Champagne the most as we love all the windows. Hope you enjoy your trip.

I think you will enjoy staying at the Pomerol very much. It is a lovely quiet apartment, very clean and in a very good location.
We never felt unsafe for a minute, while it is a busy tourist area (rue Cler) it is also a family neighborhood. You will see the moms with children on the way to the school on rue Dominique each day and the ladies doing their shopping at the market..
The outer part of the bldg is shabby. You walk through big wooden doors into a "lobby" that is really a walkway that takes you to the actual doors of the building that are glass. That lobby area is a bit dull & dreary.
I was told by Carolyn that it is a Condominium and that brings along with it the many voices wanting to be heard on just what they should do about decorating/fixing things up, so it takes even longer for anything to be done.
Once you walk into the apt (top floor-corner of bldg)you are in a different world!
It is bright, many windows and lots of light, you forget everything else ..especially when you look out that window and see the Eiffel Tower winking back at you.
We would go back again, or to another of their apts. They take very good care of the apts and their clients.
We were there in March and found that the heat works very well, so you should be quite cozy in the winter

Thanks to all for your great info. I'm sure the apt will be great. I am a bit concerned about the weather in February, but will certainly appreciate Paris with few crowds.
Re Parisperfect - they have been great to deal with thus far (I've hounded them, too, you can imagine!) and they are always pleasant. Also, I think their apt prices are very reasonable, considering the prices of hotels (I had originally looked into several hotels in the 5th and 6th - nothing fancy - and they were charging upwards of $200 US per night; so , the apt was actually a savings in the long run.

It is not on the Paris Perfect site but can be accessed at www.vrbo.com When you have reached this site then put in 10459 in the reference box and click and it will take you to Champagne. They are in the process of renovating two other apartments in the same building which is at the intersection of rue St. Dominique, Ave. Rapp, and Ave de la Bourdannais. As you probably know, all of their apartments are in the 7th.

Just back from a week in Paris Perfect's Cabernet apartment. They run a very professional operation, provide you with all you need upon arrival (and before). Their on-site manager, Carolyn, is extremely helpful. There's no need to worry in dealing with them at all. It was a totally lovely experience. This part of the 7e is very tourist-friendly: easy access to all kinds of food shopping and buses, and easy strolls to quite excellent restaurants nearby. Please feel free to send any questions my way. I'll be happy to respond once jet lag lifts.

Loved reading this thread. We're headed to Paris in about a month, and staying at three of the ParisPerfect apartments--booked late. I noticed in a posting by Benitakaren (from another thread) that we should bring our own toilet paper. Isn't there any provided, or is it just not 'Charmin"? Is there anything else we should bring for the apartments, or is it provided--soap, hangars, etc.?

Toilet paper is provided, it's just not Charmin. There are plenty of hangers, soap, and just about everything else you'll need to feel at home in Paris. You are sure to enjoy these apartments and your upcoming trip. Bon voyage.

elsiejune put it perfectly, the TP is just not Charmin It was gas station toilet paper..the only cheap aspect of staying in that apartment!
They provide soaps, shampoos, laundry detergent, plenty of towels and blankets, the TP was just rough and cheap. There is a FranPrix downstairs at the Pomerol, we bought our water and T paper etc there.
Also, plenty of hangars, more than a hotel usually provides.
Have a great time!!

We were not as smart as she was and just dealt with it. Sometimes when I travel I go on brain dead status. I would recommend some baking soda just in case someone before you put some smelly cheese in there. I am sure they sell baking soda in France but sometimes is not so easy to find items unless you speak French. I wanted rubbing alcohol and it took the pharmacy 30 minutes to find what I wanted with three people helping me. The best part was the Nepresso coffee machine they have in their apartments. I have found the one I had in my apartment on the internet for $200. Can't wait to receive it and pretend I am sitting on the balcony with a view of the Tower. Have a wonderful trip.
