Barb and Jim arrived at 6. We opened a bottle of champagne, toasted to being in Paris. I showed them this lovvely apt. Jim took some pictures of his own. We talked about all the things they have seen in a shot time in Paris and of their forthcoming trips on to the Loire, Dordogne, Provence and Italy! L'ami Jean was crowded by the time we left. They seem to have quie a bit of confusion, getting orders mixed up etc. We did not have dessert. We had a pleasant walk back to my apartment, said our goodbyes and called it a night. Another pleasant day by my outside views. A busy day ahead with nice friends and what I know will be a great meal, as always, at Fables. a bientot..... |
Went our for my croissant and cafe creme. Just had to take this picture..don't you love the parking in Paris!
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...e/100_0187.jpg You just may lift them out! a bientot... Joan |
Thanks for the rec, djkbooks, but I have already tried there, as well. No worries, I'm sure something will work out soon.
Joan, you say you are not a photographer but your pictures are lovely! It's great seeing Paris in "real time'. Have a wonderful day! Kimberly |
GJ - I so appreciate being able to anticipate our arrival soon in Paris by reading your thread and viewing the pics. Chez Pierrot looks like a very good option as its not too far from our apartment on r. Grenelle. How was the creme brulee?
|
Kimberly,
You were not able to work something out with Taryn/Michelle at Paris Perfect? Chicago/Dallas/Girl: The creme brulee was very good. I have seen other desserts..if you are a dessert person, you will enjoy! Chez Pierrot is a simple, good bistro. I was glad to find them still there. Had a super day today. Friends (laidbck) arrived at 11:3o and other friend(weekender) who came on the eurostar arrived about 12:15. They enjoyed my apt. tour. We enjoyed some champagne and visiting before heading down to Fables. We had a great lunch, of course. I forgot my camera, but laidback took pics and will send to me and I will pass on. Weekender had to catch the eurostar back to London and we 3 stopped in to Violon so they could make a reservation. We chatted a minute with Christian in front of Cafe Constant and then went in for cafe, wine. We then went our separate ways. I had to pack for my move tomorrow! I will post more pics when received.. a bientot... Joan |
Lunch at Fables de la Fontaine today..laidbacks, weekender and gracejoan. Laidback took the pictures

Sounds like another great day in Paris (when is it not??). I'm jealous of your lunch gtg at Fables. Usually, we're all on one side talking to you while you're living it up in Paris. No fair that weekender and laidback get to share a piece of it.
What are your plans for Sunday? This isn't the l'Obe date, is it? -Roberta |
Well. I'm happy to see who joined you in these happy meals.
Though I know what our charming Jim lookes like. I did not know weekender.(don't tell him, I thought he was a she!) |
Hi Joan,
Just checking in once more to read up on all your fun!! Packing for Paris (& Ireland)today so feel quite excited. Thank you for showing us all the food pics! These last ones at Fables looked fab! Is this your favourite out of all the CC restaurants? I hope you don't mind me saying this but the dishes put before you at l'Ami Jean did not look like the chef had made too much effort. The food must taste OK? - or they would'nt be packed when you left?. Wishing you lots of glorious sunshine for the rest of your stay! |
Hi tod,
I know you are excited with your trip about to begin. Re: l'Ami Jean. I have avoided making dining arrangements at l'Ami Jean, from conversations with friends who were not very pleased after trying it more than once. also, having stopped in there when passing one day when here on a previous trip and asking if they might have a spot for me later..they did not. I did notice the seating and it did not look that great. Many say they have great rice pudding! I really can't say that rice pudding will go far on my dining reservation considerations! The servers and kitchen were confused with everything as to what we ordered and for whom. I was a guest of my nice friends. I did enjoy their company and we had a great time. I really don't know that I would make a reservation there. I know so many, many others. I don't know why the raves..guess it must just must be me! Fables is an excellent place for seafood. The Constant restaurants are all so different from one another. Violon is still their premier restaurant, and I do think an excellent buy for the prices that they chaarge, for food, ambience and service. I usually go to Les Cocottes for lunch..I guess high stool dining just doesn't seem like dinner seating to me..that's just me..I could easily change because of the excellent foo there! Cafe Constant is a true bistro..the downstairs is wherre you/I prefer to be, but not always suitable for your group. Excellent food and value. Great spot. Have a great trip..I did enjoy Ireland some years back. I was quite surprised with the food being so great..a lot of French cuisine! a bientot... Joan |
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...e/100_0190.jpg
I went to Pasco's for lunc. I called over there this morning and made a reservation. I went early..12:30. When I arrived there was only one other table filled. I thoght a reservations may not have been necessary! Well, that was a mistake. They just kept arriving...I think all were local French. Nice not to be in a place filled with tourists! My lunch was very good. The menu is 23.50 for entree and plat or plat and dessert. Don't remember all 3 price. My single glass of wine was 4.50. A good place to have on your list..especially for a Sunday. I then stopped by the Ecole Militaire metro and filled my Navigo Decouverte for the week beginning tomorrow. A grey day and not bad temperature..a light coat and scarf feel comfortable. I did a bit of wandering in the Marais..not much before returning homeward. http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...e/100_0191.jpg http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...e/100_0192.jpg http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...e/100_0193.jpg a bientot.... Hi Joan,
packing up today for our flight tomorrow to Paris. Tried to get in CC last year for lunch but it was full. what is the best time to get there in order to get in? what is your view on Au Bon Accueil as we have dinner reservations there on wednesday. enjoy the rest of your time in lovely Paris. |
Cornelius01
Go to CC at noon..it fills up quickly. Au Bon Accueil is still having nice things said. I jsut have not had time to go there. It is only a block away from me. I need to stop by and make a reservation. I am meeting a forum person (we do not know one another) at CC at noon on Tuesday. I will get there early to get a downstaiars table...more atmosphere! If you go in the evening get there by 8:00. Same goes for Les Cocottes lunch or dinner. We will probably pass on the streets or in a Constant. I often go to CC for breakfast. Have a good flight..if there is such a thing!! a bientot... Joan |
Thank you very much for the good wishes Joan. Your photo of 29 Ave.Rapp certainly brought back memories of a trip some +-5 years ago when I sat on a bench quite near that door repairing the elastoplast on my heels and toes - boy did I have foot problems that day. No more very closed-in shoes (like trainers) for me ever!
Of course 29 Ave.Rapp is a prime example of Art Nouveau architecture and won it's designer, Jules Lavirotte, first prize at the Concours des Facades de la Ville de Paris in 1901. It's ceramics and brickwork are decorated with animal and flower motifs intermingling with female figures. These superimposed on a multicoloured sandstone base to produce a facade that is deliberately erotic, and was certainly subversive in it's day! Also worth visiting ( which we did) is Lavriotte's building, complete with watchtower, which can be found in the Square Rapp, very closeby. |
Funny you mentioned the Lavriotte building. I almost stopped for a picture today. I have taken it before. Not this trip.
Not fun to have sore feet. Comfy shoes are a must! a bientot... Joan |
tod,
You will probably like this one. It is down on Bourdonnais and St. Dominique. I see the tops of it from my apt. over the rooftops. http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...e/100_0194.jpg a bientot... Joan |
Simply fantastic! Thank you Joan.

great shot, loving these photos

Beautiful day!! I went to Flirt The to see what kind of weekend Florent and Michael had in Marseille. I had breakfast and caught the 82 bus to Pl. Victor Hugo. A nice area to wander around. Many nice shops. I returned, and got off at Champ de Mars/Suffren and walked acros the Champ de Mars to home.
I thought the Ritz Bar Vendome sounded good for lunch. I called, but they are full today! C'set la vie! I called Au Bon Accueil as a replacement...they have a spot for me. I have not been in a couple years..even though always very nearby. I will check it out today! I think my pigeons are looking for me! a bientot... Joan |
I had lunch at Au Bon Accueil. Very nice. I'll tell you what..if I had to make a choice between l'Ami Jean and Au Bon Accueil, I wouldn't have to think twice! If I have time, I will return for dinner...otherwise it will be in the fall. It is never far from me!
Pictures: http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...e/100_0198.jpg A nice green salad with some cheese, walnuts a touch of raspberry in the dressing. Very good http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...e/100_0199.jpg canard http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...e/100_0200.jpg Square Rapp http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...e/100_0201.jpg Square Rapp I do have reservations for Bar Vendome at the Ritz for Friday, which is VE Day. Should be a good place to celebbrate VE Day some 64 years later!! a bientot... Joan |
Joan,
No, unfortunately, I was not able to secure lodging with PP, but will definatly keep them in mind for next time when I have more lead up time to plan. I will be in another appartement in the 1st arrond. near Les Halles. So thankful to have secured my accomodations! Now I can focus on restaurants, etc. (Your food looks divine!) I am wondering about the Navigo pass you have mentioned. Is this for the bus lines or Metro? I was planning to get a Carte Orange for the metro but have not heard of the Navigo. Again, thankful for your input! Kimberly |
Wow this is a fun thread. I am reading while I am suppose to be working.
It is all GraceJoans fault. :) |
Kimberly,
The Carte Orange is gone. For non French it is the Navigo Decouverte. You pay 5 euros for the folder, add a picture and they load it monthly..if you arrive 1st of month..or weekly otherwise. When I was here in Dec. I went to the Ecole Militaire Metro, did picture there.16.80 euros for Zones 1/2 per week. Good on metro and bus. The bus is so great. You can bring a pic with you. It is actually smaller than our passport size pics..they just cut it down. Too bad you couldn't get sosmething with PP..this late, it can be difficult. Joan |
jetsetj,
I get blamed for a lot of things!! Enjoy your reading..the work can wait! a bientot.... Joan |
It isn't called the Carte Orange any more. You must purchase a plastic card now and have money/time added to the card. So for one week (same restrictions as on the previous Carte Orange), you just add the time to your plastic card. The card costs 5E and is reusable. Just keep adding time. It works exactly like the Carte Orange. The only difference is that you first make a one-time purchase of a plastic card (you still need to put your picture on it) and then add time to it.

Glad you enjoyed Au Bon Accueil. We went there several years ago and enjoyed it as well!

Joan or anyone else--
Have you ever eaten at the 7th floor open air terrace of the Raphael Hotel? It has been closed for renovations and just reopened today. It is on the spendy side--70E but the view looks absolutely spectacular and the hotel appears to be gorgeous. The menu appears at: http://miseajour.apicius.com/raphael...spleinciel.asp Here's the page for the hotel's terrasses et jardins: http://www.raphael-hotel.com/fr/navigation.htm I was hoping to eat here but not for 70E for lunch. I am dying of curiosity, however. Lunch is only served Monday through Friday so I will attempt to go up and see the view on a Sunday when I am in Paris. |
No I am not familiar with the Raphael. It does look nice. Their bar area might be anice place to try.
I was up and off to Cafe Constant for breakfast and did some errands. I was to meet Inna at Cafe Constant at noon. She had contacted me from TA and we arranged this. She got a little lost and arrived at 12:30. Cute, cute young gal who lives in NYC and ffrom the Ukraine. We had a nice lunch and she told me how she really has found many friends in Paris and will likely be sad to leave on Sunday. We stopped for her to see what a PP apartment was like and then she headed off towards the ET. I then had some places that I wanted to go to so waas off again. I forgot to take pictures of our lunch..but actually we both had the crab salade with pommes de terre, a glass of wine and dessert. She had a nice looking caramel something or other and I had apple pie with ice cream..not the usual looking apple pie...a flat crist with sliced apples lined up..very good. I did take a couple pictures of "my" pigeon: http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...e/100_0202.jpg http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...00_0002-12.jpg Made my reservation for Violon on Tuesday...last day! a bientot... Joan |
Funny, although you said you forgot to take pics at lunch, I was thinking the pigeon pic was going to be cooked on a plate!! My friend ate pigeon during a trip to Paris. We would later walk around Paris, seeing the pigeons walking/flying and she would tell them "I just ate your brother".
Two questions: How do you know it's the same pigeon each day? and How come he doesn't bring his friends by now? |
I know his color markings for ID. He is begging more ofen..also getting fat! I don't know what he tells his friends. They don't seem to follow him. He spends a lot of time on the roof top across the way..keeping any eye on me!
Going to this place for lunch tomorrow: http://www.au-petit-sud-ouest.fr/con...-sud-ouest.php Not a healthy place with all that cholesterol! a bientot... Joan |
I just checked out the menu. Couldn't help but think of :
"Duck, Duck, GOOSE!!". I'm surprised the dessert menu doesn't include a goose liver creme brulee or a duck gizzard eclair! Enjoy, I'm sure it will be delicious. |
You don't find the l'oie (goose) as much anymore, as you do the canard (duck). We shall see how it is.
Off to Les Cocottes, soon, for dinner! a bientot... Joan |
Hi Joan...I'm having such a good time reading all your reports as I wait for grandbaby to arrive...looks like I'll be up here in SF for longer than planned as he's taking his time making his debut...but well worth the wait...so please keep the pictures and reports coming.
I've got a question about pigeons...have you ever seen a baby pigeon? When we were last in Paris and watching them in a garden we asked that question...they are always the same size...some a little fatter like yours and some a little thinner but no baby ones. If you ever see a baby, take a picture for me... Keep enjoying your marvelous trip and have an extra glass of champagne for me... |
Cheers from me Joan,
All packed and heading to bed for a good nights sleep. Longhaul is not one of my favourite things in life but through the years I have had to accept the fact that it's part of the package! At least we have wonderful upgrades from all our Airmiles and will be sleeping totally prone after imbibing a couple of glasses of champagne with usually a very good dinner. Of course that all has to be done before we fly over central Africa and the equater - it gets rather bumpy sometimes with tropical weather even at night - which I hope to sleep through. So glad you enjoyed Au Bon Accueil - I have just showed my photographer husband your pics of Square Rapp and he immediately said "I want to go back there!" Thanks for the rooftops!Always fab. As you always say, A bientot! |
I should have taken my camera!! I am so stuffed! I went thinking that I might have dessert. No way!
I had an asparagus soup..in a cocotte pot..a big blob of cream in the center. I then order the chicken fricassee cocotte...how delicious..both dark and white meat...wine and bread. I felt like I waddled home. No, I have never seen a baby pigeon. They must have nests with them in. Probably up high in the buildings back in places. My pigeon will miss me when I move. Only a block away for him to follow me! a bientot.... Joan |
HI Joan,
I am loving your daily reports and am taking lots of notes for our upcoming trip. Thank you so much for sharing your trip with us all! I saw on the Spring Blog that Daniel is again taking reservations for Spring 1 in the summer but that the new place is not open yet. If you happen to see or speak to him while you are there, would it be possible to get us reservations for 2 people for anytime between May 15 to 30 (except May 20 or 28, we have prior committments). Can you also please find out if he will be holding cooking classes on either May 16, 23 or 30th, we are in Paris all 3 Saturdays. My e-mail address is [email protected] Merci beaucoup and keep us happy with more pictures and reports (I have to try Les Cocottes this trip, we ate at Fables last year for my birthday and it was divine!) Jo |
Jo, I am going by the new place again, tomorrow. Will see what I find out. I have tried calling and no luck.
I missed the boat today in not taking my camera for lunch here: http://www.au-petit-sud-ouest.fr/con...-sud-ouest.php Wonderful..charming, charming place. Unless you don't care for duck, super foie gras and perhaps goat cheese. The menu is the same lunch/dinner. I had an English menu. There was a "huge"salad that I asked about..it meant that it was a main raather than a starter. I ordered it. A wonderful huge green salad with slices of duck, a slab of foie gras and avery large slice of toast with 4 or more slices of hot goat cheese on it. I sometimes find goat cheese too strong for my palate, but not this!! They also have a shop that sells great foie gras and a deli of desserts. I think you all know that I like good dining places...This place is way up my list. You can't eat this every day. I should have taken my camera!! a bientot... Joan |
ParisJo: Good eye about Spring 1 being open again this summer. Actually, I am excited about eating there since it is Daniel's original location. Then the next time I go I could eat at the new place.
I too am hoping to take a cooking class from Daniel as well as to eat at his restaurant. I think the price is the same for lunch and for dinner so dinner is my first choice. I am so grateful to you Joan for trying to set this up for me--and the other people who gave you their information. You are very kind to do this. I am sorry that the process is so elusive these days. I do hope it comes together without much more trouble. Thanks again for your time and efforts Joan. |
Au petite sud-ouest, the menu looks fabulous, I can't believe you forgot the camera! I can't wait to try this place, thanks. I noticed it is in my pudlo book also.
If you liked duck liver (one of my favs) we always go to Le Hanger in the 3rd, they have the best dish, duck liver and mashed potatoes, it's the bomb, if you are in that hood you should check it out. We eat there every trip and it's always great (their little raviolis are to die for too) Can't believe it's almost over, thanks for all the cheap thrills. |
We all know that Joan loves fine dining! I am here to tell everyone that she is as slim as a rail, too.
We had a great lunch at Fables last Saturday. As promised, Joan did not go to McDonalds for a "Big Breakfast" but she redeemed herself with the Taittinger being iced and ready at her luxe digs, the Paris Perfect Richebourg apartment. I would be more than happy to move in there permanently. a bientot, Weekender |
