Paris

Hi all!, Can anyone recommend a show in Paris? We read about Moulin Rouge but it seems so commercial and touristy….any comments are appreciated. We would like to possibly see a burlesque show with dinner and hopefully dancing after.. thanks all comments are appreciated.

all burlesque shows are commercial and touristy, that's exactly who they are for. I'm serious, if that's what you want to go to, that type of entertainment is for tourists (or visiting businessmen from other countries). I'm not sure if you are making a distinction between Burlesque and what is generally advertised and called "cabarets" in Paris. Moulin Rouge would be the latter (also Lido, which is more modern and glitzy like Las Vegas). YOu don't go to the Lido to avoid commercialism, though, just like you don't go to Vegas to avoid that.

So the Moulin Rouge is as good as any, and perhaps better. I haven't been to it as that isn't my interest, but from the reviews I've read, they do as good a job as any and do have some nice costumes. I don't know about dancing afterwards, never heard of any place that puts on these expensive "spectacles" that has dancing, they can't afford it, they are too busy putting on the shows and they have two sittings a night.

I don't know a lot about dancing spots, it really depends if you mean ballroom-type dancing (or tea dances), or disco or salsa, etc. So if you don't mind going somewhere else for the dancing, that could work if you want a club or disco or something.

The only Parisians who go to such places are obliged to go for business reasons or else because they have a family member with a dream of going there some day.

But it might be useful for you to know that there are some other shows that might be of interest.

The Crazy Horse Saloon on avenue George V is a very well reputed and small place known for being both very sexy and very innovative visually.

The Paradis Latin in the Latin Quarter is famous for being a 'fun' place with a flashy show and the prerequisite number of tits.

Chez Michou in Montmartre has a tranvestite show which has been renowned for decades. You would be likely to see Michou himself there, wearing his signature powder blue suit.

Unfortunately, I have not been to any of these places, but the last two are favored much more by the French than by foreign tourists.

My sister went a couple times with business clients. She is very critical but thought the Crazy Horse show was very good. She advised not doing the meals which are very expensive and IHO, mediocre at best.

We went to the Moulin Rouge many years ago. I would never do it again--and I also hate Las Vegas!! It will still be expensive even without the mediocre meal. Spend it on a great meal somewhere and have a nice evening.

The Lido is a big production show that is comparable to the Jubilee show in Vegas, while the Crazy Horse is a true Parisian institution that features French girls performing in the nude in a way that celebrates the female form in a very classy manor. The Lido is big and extravagant while the Crazy Horse is intimate and incredibly sexy.

Just for the show, not dinner and dancing, go to the Moulin Rouge. Sure it's touristy (we're tourists!)but fun, lively, beautiful, colorful costumes, good acts, some nudity, and the Can-Can!! We had a great time and if you go to Paris, gotta go once to the Moulin Rouge. Have a great time!

there is a club called Bizzart in the 10th arr. that has soul/r&b dancing every Thursday. Starts with a live band (go to youtube and you'll find videos) and after that there's continued dancing to a DJ. I haven't been yet but we're going in September. There's also a cool place in the Bois de Vincennes on an island - dinner and dancing. Have fun!!

Been to le Moulin Rouge in '06 and loved the show. This summer we were thinking Lido but after reading the comments about the Crazy Horse, we're reconsidering...thanks!

laurela, thanks for the link. Bois de Vincennes sounds fun.
