sandypaws, if you are staying in the 7th, I forgot to include L'Arpege
and Le Divellee, a well-known seafood resto,, le petit troquet, and the Jules-Verne on the second level of the Eiffel tower.
There's the Rodin musée in the 7th and a few other obscure ones I never got to.

>>>>>>>>>>we have been to Paris many times--before Rick Steves was even on the horizon. Some people like places in spite of RS. But it does make an easy target of someone if they like what Rick does, doesn't it.

Exactly, Gretchen. When I took my parents to Paris in 1990, we stayed at the Grand Hotel Leveque on Rue Cler because "Cheap Sleeps in Paris" recommended it - and we were quite satisfied with the hotel and the location. I don't even know whether RS was on TV yet, but I certainly hadn't heard of him at the time. Good grief, it's not like no one ever visited Paris or any other European city before Rick Steves came along!

We stayed at the Relais Bosquet in the 7th last year and it had absolutely nothing to do with Rick whoever. We booked it based on room with view of the tower and good reviews. Service was wonderful. Room spacious, squeaky clean, good bed and pillows. Much nicer than the two different hotels I've stayed at in the 6th. And less expensive too. I don't know how anyone can say the 7th is too touristy. The 6th is much more touristy and crowded.

Cafe du Marche: We ate there because it was close to our hotel. I order some kind of bouf because I've never had bad beef in Paris. I was horrified to see a pile of instant mashed potatoes with ground beef in the most horrible tasting gravy. I think canned dog food would have been better. My husband who hadn't met food he didn't like, did that night. It is cheap and you do get what you pay for.

I have been reading so many bad comments about Cafe du Marche and the food sounds disgusting. I was wondering if anyone has contacted Rick Steves and other guides that recommend this restaurant to stop doing so.

cigalechanta,
Thanks for those added restaurants in the 7th! The 6th has always been a security blanket to me, but I think it's time to explore a new area. Of course, I keep telling myself, we can get to Jardin du Luxembourg and Saint Sulpice easily

Cafe du Marche gets consistently bad reviews on this Forum, perhaps deservedly so. I cannot comment on the quality of the dinner cuisine, not having eaten an evening meal there, but have found it acceptable for sitting and enjoying a drink while watching the passing scene on the Rue. Use it for what it is.

My only other experience was a positive one. We were up very early to get to CDG for a flight, and went for one more stroll to watch Paris wake up. We sat down at the Cafe about 06:45 and asked for a cafe and an omelette. Coffee was no problem, but the chef was not expected before 07:00.

We explained that we had a bit of time before our shuttle came and would really appreciate something to eat, if a all possible. A few moments later the cook came through the door, the waitress spoke to him, he came over and shook our hands, then sped back to the kitchen to turn out a couple of delightful concoctions in record time.

The tip reflected our pleasure.

Nothing is all bad in Paris!

sandy, we were in that apt in the 7th last March and a few times that week, we walked over to the 6th and shopped, ate and browsed the galleries. It is maybe a 10-15 min walk so you are never too far if you get "homesick" for the 6th
Next trip, I want to go to the 16th! Now that, will really feel new! We have never stayed on the Right Bank But I found an apt that I must stay in , if I can not own it lol.

Scarlett,
Thanks! I'll keep that in mind, as I may well get "homesick for the 6th" We walked around the 16th, and we really liked it. It seems like a real neighborhood. I have a book called, _Hotels of Character and Charm in Paris_, and it lists several attractive hotels in the 16th, although maybe you'll be staying in an apartment. We loved the area around Le Musée Marmottan and the Jardin du Ranelagh. There was a nice area with restaurants nearby.

I bought the book Hotels with Charm and Character years ago! to help decided on a hotel..using it we picked the Lutece on the Ille St-Louis. I love that book lol. Every hotel we have been to is listed in it and it does give you some perspective on what is "charm" in some hotels

I have to say, too, that Patricia Wells was writing about the charms of rue Cler LOOOONG before Rick Steves got ahold of it.
