paris - 7th arr.
 

I have checked many hotels in the 7th arr. near Rue Cler and Eiffel Tower but have not seen any to have all good ratings. Most have some good and some bad. Does anyone know of any that have all good ratings? I know this sounds a little silly but thought I would try.

I saw you asked earlier about the Muguet. I think it's a very good choice. It's clean, modern and good value. Two of my friends love it. Also you might check Relais Bosquet. I can't think of a single complaint I would have about it.

The Muguet is rated #20 on tripadvisor out of over 1500 hotels in Paris. I think about the complaint the hotel gets is that the neighborhood is a little quiet. Since you are looking for a hotel in the 7th, this seems perfect for you. If you have a question about a particular perceived problem, then ask it here. Many people on this forum have stayed at the Muguet and I am sure they can answer your questions.

I did see another hotel in the 7th listed as #11 on tripadvisor. It's the Hotel de Varenne. Looks very nice but it's not as close to Rue Cler as the Muguet. You might want to check it out.

Look to some guidebooks for guidance - if they all give a hotel a good rating, then it will be a nice place. These books and their web sights have no ulterior motives. Their reputaions rest on their objectivity.

Web sights where trolls and anyone else with a chip on their shoulder can anonymously post will always show some undeserved bad reviews.

JameJamerz, I can understand your wanting to stay at a hotel that is excellent in all categories. But it's not possible. If you read some good comments here or there about a particular hotel you're interested in, you have to assume that it's a well-maintained hotel with a nice staff. Honestly you appear to be very obsessed with your hotel situation.

The top hotels in the world get criticized by some. If you are looking for a place with NO possible negatives, you should not travel -- it's that simple.

No, I don't think that was a harsh statement in this case. The poster has been asking about hotels consistently and although he/she has gotten advice and reassurances they seem to not be enough. Where does one draw the line at accepting a hotel? No matter which hotel one chooses there will be negative aspects about it. No hotel is perfect!

That's harsh? Only in the way that the basic truth is harsh. I'm really serious. Anyone who travels is bound to find some negatives. The good traveler overlooks them (unless there are just too many to overlook). But there is no such thing as perfection when one travels.

We're staying at the Muguet this time, because the Hotel du Champ de Mars was booked, and I had to look elsewhere. But when we stayed at the Champ de Mars in 2003, we were delighted to have such a boutique-type hotel to stay at at such a reasonable price, just a few steps from Rue Cler. They do book up early, so that's really the only downside.

Jules, there are mixed comments about the Champ de Mars. I highly doubt that the original poster will want to stay there as it's not perfect.

It sounds like the original poster is referring to Tripadvisor for ratings? I don't know what other commonly found site he might be reviewing for comments. I would say that is it virtually impossible to find a hotel that every single person will agree is positive on every aspect. This is because a lot of comments are subjective and personal opinions based on factors that are important to one person and not another. I'm sure any hotel in the world will have some guest who dislikes some aspect about the hotel, whether it is regular or just an event that happened during their stay. Some things that have bothered me about a hotel would elicit no complaints from others because they don't care about them or just because of random chance, something didn't happen while they were there.

Just choose a hotel based on reviewing the comments and deciding if the things people say are important to you, and the overall majority of opinions. Sometimes you really can't tell because too many people don't describe their complaints very well, I know. For example, complaints about size of rooms are difficult to judge because very few people actually estimate the size of room they are complaining about.

I don't care for the Muguet, for example, and have several complaints about it that have nothing to do with the location. It is certainly not a perfect hotel in my opinion. I think it is a decent value for a 2* hotel, but nothing remotely remarkable.

If you're expecting to find a hotel that has received perfect marks from everyone in every category, I think you'll be disappointed wherever you choose. We stayed at the two-star Hotel Valadon in the 7th last month (currently rated #156 in Paris on Trip Advisor), and were absolutely delighted with it.

I stayed at the Hotel La bourdonnais for ten nights and had no complaints it all. It was better than I expected, helpful staff, big bathroom, a balcony with view of the tower.

Stop worrying about the rue Cler and use a Michelin red guide on Paris to find a hotel that meets your requirements. Just because Rick Steves inexplicably dedicates a chapter to this tiny and unremarkable street doesn't mean that it's worth your while.

We liked the Hotel la Bourdonnais in the 7th. A nice balcony with view of the Eiffel Tower, in room 503 (a quad room). If you click on my name above, you will find my travel report of London-Paris-Amsterdam, with specifics about the hotel, its neighborhood, and some restaurants we liked in Paris. It, too, have some mixed reviews on tripadvisor, but as someone said, you hardly ever find 100 percent glowing reviews of any place.

Patrick and francophile - I guess you didn't get my slightly sarcastic tone when I said "a little harsh" and that's why I put the winking eye. Ah, cyberspace. I totally agree that no place is perfect. What is agreeable to some travelers will be unacceptable to others. Especially in Paris, you spend very little time in your hotel room.
