Paris 3rd or 9th?
 

I am trying to decide between an apartment in either the 3rd or the 9th. The apartment in the 3rd is one rue Notre Damede Nazareth, near Republique. The apartment in the 9th is on rue Condorcet, inbetween Cadet and Anvers metro stops. The difference in price is 300 dollars per month.

izzy, there are many things to get into considerations..first are you a female or male,
your age,
if you like to stay closer to the sights or if you dont mind to take the metro,
also if you plan to go out at night..

The 3rd is more convenient, better locations, more comfortable and perhaps safer..

The 9 ,is around Montmartre , is quite an interesting neighborhood to visit, but I would not want to walk there at night, not by myself anyway..

It is up to you to decide..After all is your moneys..

oh yes- sorry i suppose it might help if i gave information. I am female, and will traveling with a friend who is also female. As we plan to be in Paris for a month, I don't think that being near the attractions is necessary.

My son and his new wife stayed in the 9th this last visit and enjoyed it very much. They liked the cultural diversity there. I had my reservations initially, but enjoyed the area right at metro Cadet. The smaller side streets were a little scary at night IMO.

Since there are 2 of you, the difference in cost would only be $150/mo. If my budget could handle that, I would prefer to stay in the 3rd and not be uptight at night.

The 9th can vary, depending on where you are. The northwest part, around Pigalle and the Moulin Rouge, is kinda sleazy and can be a bit dodgy at night. But the part near the Opera, department stores and Grands Boulevards, is quite fine, if not particularly interesting, and packed with hotels and tourist-ready restaurant. (The Hard Rock Cafe and a Virgin Megastore are in the area, if that's any indication). I stayed at a hotel on Rue de Faubourg Montmarte near between Rue Lafayette and Blvd Hausmann and it was fine. Commercial and touristy, but fine, and the streets were busy even at 3 a.m.

Martytravels is quite right. Two weeks ago we stayed at Le Grand Intercontinental in the 9th, across the street from the Opera Garnier. Although the area is quite busy, it seemed safe, and was an easy 5 or 10 minute walk to the Madeleine area. The Opera itself is spectacular, and the nearby big department stores are quite interesting, particularly the Galleries Lafayette Gourmet store which has every food item imaginable. We loved the area.
