Can anyone make a recommendation on hotels in Paris, Florence and Rome? I will not be spending much time in the hotel however I don't want to stay in a dump either. The 2 most important criteria would be that is is located near several sights/monuments and that is is clean & friendly staff. Thanks so much in advance.

I recently stayed in an apartment in Florence, so I can't comment on hotels there. However, we really enjoyed Hotel Residence Monge in the Latin Quarter of Paris in July. 95 euro per night, clean, modern rooms with A/C. It's also close to a metro stop, Notre Dame and other sights.

You can find them on the web. I booked on line and then faxed my CC info once Julie confirmed by email. She was very timely in responding to me.

Ask for a room with a balcony if you go with them.

My family and I really enjoyed the Hotel Alimandi in Rome. It is around the corner from the Vatican Museum so it is very convenient for that and for St. Peter's. The hotel was very quiet and clean with a great rooftop breakfast area (delicious breakfast included in the price).

I stayed here it's called the Familia Hotel and I can recomend this. The hotel is on the Left Bank and close to the Notre-Dame & Metro stops, it sounds like this would work for you.

You can find it on Fodors Paris hotels. Also right next door, same owners, is the Minerve Hotel www.hotel-paris-minerve.com. I found the first one in a Fodors travel book on Paris. Good rates. location, clean & friendly too.

Also for Italy if you look on www.guestinitaly.com they have both a Paris and Italy section with a good variety of listings with great descriptions.

I can highly recommend the Cimitori Guest House in florence. Great location, only 5 rooms, very clean and Domenico is an excellent host.

The Hotel Cimitori B&B looks really good!

The Hotel Mansart was a perfect choice for our family of four. It is located to the right of The Ritz at Place Vendome, an awesome location. The hotel was reasonably priced, had large comfortable rooms, was very clean and had a pleasant staff. I highly recommend it, and would readily stay there again.

I just booked an unbelieveable room (145 Eruos) at Hotel de Fleurie. After a great deal of research, this was the best for the money. Amazing location (St. Germaine - 3 blocks from the Seine and Pont Neuf), beautiful decore, great staff. It's small but very warm and quaint. Cagirlinparis, how did you manage to get that low rate at Hotel de Fleurie? Is this for a std. double room?

We got into the Hotel Champs-du-Mars in Paris' Rue Cler neighborhood near the Eiffel Tower for $75 Euros/night, but I know they book up quickly because they're listed in Rick Steves book.

As for Rome, we found a B&B near the Trevi Fountain for $90 a night -- a bargain as Rome was the most expensive city in all of Europe when we booked our rooms. It's called the 3 Coins Trevi Fountain, and is basic accomodations but nice nonetheless.

In Florence, we found a room for about $70 Euros -- at Hotel Enza.

I travel solo, but the rate is per room, not per person. Why, did you think this is a good rate?

And, to answer your quesion...It is a standard double room w/ view.

Have seen numerous recommendations for Hotel de Fleurie and thought I'd look at their website, but can't get it to work beyond the home page. But it has one of the funniest things I've ever seen on a website. In the lower right hand corner it says, "if you can't see this page, click here"!!!! Sort of like "will all those not present, please raise your hands".

I was able to enter the website and 145 euro is a bit low for a double room w/view. Yes, I realize it's the rate per room not person. So probably it's the time you're staying there that's why.

That's within the normal rate range of Hotel de Fleurie, depending on season. I suspect it may be a single because it is their single room rate (which could be a small double, often they are), although their std doubles are 130 euro in low season.
