Paris 13th district
Hello, we have just returned from paris
Dec 5 to Dec 19 and stayed at the Holiday inn express Place D'italie and it was wonderful. The reason I am writing this report is because of the show $40 a day!
We were able to eat for $40 per day each in paris with no problem! our favorite place was
a little spot call PLACE D' ISTANBUL right around the corner from our hotel, we had 2 GIROs that were very large made with chicken
plus 3 kinds of relishes and fries and 2 can half litres of beer each for only 13 euro total with tip! Paris is a beautiful city and the food was out of this world.

Nice to hear some positive things about the 13th Arrondissement. I think it's a great place to stay! On my recent trip I was at the Hotel Verlaine, which is next door to the Butte-aux-Cailles municipal swimming pool, about two blocks from the Place d'Italie, and a short walk away from the Parc Montsouris. I like to walk so I used the 13th as a jumping-off point for walks throughout Paris, but I suppose most visitors would prefer to use the Metro from that location.
I was pleased with the Hotel Verlaine (**). The rate was approximately 54 Euros for a single room with shower and not facing the street ("sur la cour", so to speak, except that there isn't really a courtyard). Staff were friendly, and because the couple who manage the hotel are Italian, I enjoyed listening to conversations and trying to pick up a few words of this beautiful language. (I speak French, German, and Spanish, and am at the point where I'm starting to get my pronunciations and my grammatical conventions mixed up, alas!)
It is interesting that when I mentioned my plans to a French friend stateside, and when I told people I met in Paris where I was staying, pervasive racism was evident. Everyone commented that the 13th had become "too Chinese". Having spent most of my life in cities that are inherently diverse (Toronto and San Francisco), and being a person of color myself, I find that point of view upsetting.
Anyway, thanks, "jeffwill4you", for mentioning the 13th, an arrondissement that some readers here might not know too well.

I agree. The 13th has some lovely spots: south of Butte aux Cailles are some streets and alleys to explore, small houses with interesting architecture, around rue Henri Pape and Place Abbe George Henocque. Continuing west to Parc Montsouris, more alleys and gardens are to be found next to Place Rungis.
I stayed in the 13th on the edge of the 5th on my last trip, in the hotel Residence les Gobelins, a budget 2-star which I recommend. A nice park, Square Rene LeGall, is in the vicinity, as are a 14th century tower and gateway, remains of the Château de la Reine Blanche, 4 rue Gustave-Geffroy.

Thank you all for the replys. We did all the regular stuff in Paris as well as restaurants, I just wanted the people who has never been to know that it is not all high dollar and you will have a great time and eat great food for
a little money. I think everyone should go to Paris once in their lives because it is wonderful.

I took a long walk one day in that area, and enjoyed some very interesting streets, etc., and especially the Parc Montsouris. It was nice being away from the touristy areas and seeing how real Parisiens live.
