Paris 10 arr. Why no opinions on this area?

Searched for info. on 10 arr.but unable to find any input regarding suitability or otherwise for staying in this area.
The triangle of Blvd's St.Martin,Magenta,Strasbourg is the area of interest. Thanks for your input.

This is perhaps the diciest area of Paris - lots of suspect looking types running around. I stayed recently at a hotel on Blvd Strasbourg and felt anxious about coming back at night. The nearby metro stop resemebled an American slum - lots of tough-looking blacks hanging around - i've seen few scenes like this in Europe. I don't know if it's dangerous but i did not feel secure and i've traveled Europe extensively for years and have spent weeks in Paris. The area around the Est and nord stations, in this district also has many low-income housing projects full of immigrant poor - nothing against immigrants but poor folks often pickpocket, etc. The Gare du Nord itself can be dicey though a heavy police presence seems to have cleaned it up a bit.

Thanks PalQ. Now I know the reason why a 2Bed. 2Bath was $4oo cheaper in this area in comparison to 4 Arr.
Much appreciate your prompt reply.

Perhaps the very lack of information is an indication...?

Christina Dec 21st, 2004 10:35 AM

It's not particularly appealing and I see no reason why you would want to stay there. There have been several posts on this topic, however, perhaps you didn't search well or use the right word.

Sometimes people have asked specifically about the 10th arr and other times they just ask about area around Gare du Nord.

I just did a search within "France" on "hotel and gare and nord" and it was obvious in the titles of the results that posts 13, 17, 19 and 20 were about staying in that area generally. I didn't read them or look farther down.

well, other than giving a smartalecky answer like I just did, why don't you say what has drawn you to this particular area? Why are you interested in staying in your 'triangle' if you don't already know about the area? Is it to be near the train station?

Travelnut Dec 21st, 2004 10:37 AM

OK, I see more responses now.. you are searching for an apartment and saw a 'good' price...

Corky Dec 21st, 2004 11:02 AM

Difficulty in getting an apartment for
5 Adult family members which require 2bed,2bath and we seen this huge 1400 sq.ft.in the 10 arr. that was the attraction and yes in my search used "10 Arr" instead of other criteria.
Many apartment sites listed on this forum but cannot afford $4O0 U.S. a night that facilities such as we require cost.
Have trouble finding a rental for 4 nights which adds to the search for a suitable property.
Hope this puts in perspctive my original post and if you can help in an apartment search would appreciate all leads.

You will have more success finding economical places if you didn't require 2 bathrooms.

Hi yeadon,

There aremany hotels that will rent you a double and a triple (often with adjoining door) for under $400/night.

Look in the 4th, 5th and 6th.

Hotel Bonaparte has doubles at about 120E. I think a triple is about 150E.

Sorry, that should have been "Hi, Corky".

Michael Dec 21st, 2004 12:13 PM

If the apartment is near the métro Goncourt, it might be OK.

Michael Dec 21st, 2004 12:14 PM

I apologize for the previous reply. Within the triangle you mention, the neighborhood might be OK, especially as it gets closer to Place de la République.

This is an apartment listing I've found that I've bookmarked for further investigation later (I don't plan to travel to Paris until 2006).

http://www.vrbo.com/40884

It's in the 7 arr., and says it sleeps 6-8 people. It appears to have at least 2 baths. The nightly rate is 290 euros, but it requires a minimum 5 night stay. Looks like the nightly rate for a week is cheaper.

The pictures show a relatively pleasant apartment - we stayed in that area the last time we were in Paris and it was quite nice.

If anyone has knowledge about this particular property, I would appreciate any information myself.
