Northwest and United are the ONLY 2 US based airlines still offering free alcohol in economy on international flights.

Castleton - your free drinks had nothing to do with paper tickets.

kmoncrief - United and Luhtansa don't have e-ticket capabilities at this time. When you are flying both airlines on the same ticket then in situation like this the airline or TA that issued the ticket is forced to issue paper tickets.

OneWorld Alliance will be the first alliance that will have all the members capable of issuing and accepting e-tickets from their members on January 1, 2005.

This is a great reminder: If you do have paper tickets guard them as if it was money. If you leave it at home, loose it or whatever, you will be forced to buy another ticket at the airport. Only after the paper ticket flights are completed and the original ticket was not used, you can apply for a refund minus any charges.
Paper tickets should be in the same wallet as your documents and money.

Electronic tickets are painless. All the airline has to know is your name. Nothing to loose. Comfirmation number is good to have, but not necessary.

Castleton - ROTFL - I had paper tickets too! I'm sure that's it. Snowflake - make sure all your tickets are paper - none of that virtual stuff.

I'm sure glad others had free drinks. I thought I was losing it (well, I am but not about the drinks).

AAFF-

When I flew LH in Sept 03 (PHL-FRA-TXL-FRA-PHL), I was issued an e-ticket. The entire trip was operated by LH planes. The problem was the LH ticket agents were not familiar with an e-ticket at that time. They kept asking me, "Where is your ticket?" And I kept telling them, "It's an electronic ticket!" Wish I had paper tickets back then!

Flew British Airways to and from London in March. Shortly after takeoff when the bar cart was being rolled around, the attendant asked all passengers to have their tickets at the ready. Those with a paper ticket got free alcoholic beverages. If your paper ticket had more than 2 connections on it, it came with free wine as well. When my time came, not only did I get all the above but a free bottle of champagne too. Upon inqury, I was told that the attendant liked the little smiley I had drawn beside my name on the ticket. (I added lots more for the return flight home).
The lady sitting beside me was handed a bottle of water and nothing more. She put it in her bag together with her...you guessed it, e-ticket confirm and bar code.

I'm JOKING ! (Thursdays are the new Friday).

On a serious note, all our beverages on BA were free (premier economy) and for the first time I flew on an e-ticket. I was apprehensive at first, but it was a breeze. The greatest advantage of e-ticketing was e-check in. On the way out, I checked in from my desk at the office and on the return, from an internet cafe in London. I changed my seat preference and could have ordered a special meal if I wanted to (upto 12 hours prior to departure). When I got to the airport both times, I was escorted to the front of the line (past loads of paper ticketed passengers who glared at me) and was shown to a special e-checkin station and bag drop off. The attendant asked me a few questions, pulled up my confirmation on line, handed me my boarding pass, tagged my bags and I was out of there in under 4 minutes. It really was worth it. I realise that not all airlines offer e-check in and from what I understand, you can only do this with an e-ticket.

Happy travels snowflake and congrats.

allow me to correct my statement from above. LH and UA DO have e-ticket capabilities, it just that they don't have interline e-ticketing capability, meaning that one can't see the others e-ticket on their computers.

Re e-tickets vs. paper tickets, with e-tickets you are still at the mercy of the airline computer. Last year I made reservations for my husband and myself on the same itinerary and printed the confirmations. I later changed my return date and airport which required splitting the reservation, and I received new confirmations.

When we got to the outward bound airport to check in, the computer showed that my reservation had been ticketed on paper and they insisted that I had received paper tickets. It took about an hour (thank goodness for needing to get to the airport early) before the situation was ironed out.

They actually issued me a paper ticket to replace the "missing" one, and supervisors several levels up the line had to sign-off on the issuance. And they were sure I was lying...they even said, "If you should find the original ticket, be sure to send it to us." By that time I was practically shrieking "there is no original ticket, you -----!!"

I believe that if I had not been an elite member I might have had even more difficulty. Not a fun experience.
