Chamonix - Information

We will be in Chamonix in second week of May this year. We are there for 4 days.

Besides doing the must do cable car to aiguille du midi and montenvers train is there anything to do like a short walk in the gorge or visiting some nearby town. We do not ski.

Are there any weekly farmers market that we can visit. We will not have a car and will be using the local transport.

Are there any must eats / must buys from Chamonix? Can someone recommend budget eating places and Grocery stores in the town Center.

Do we get any card that can be used for travel between towns?

From Chamonix we will be going to Lyon. Do we buy train tickets in advance to get discount? Do kids get discount on regional trains as I understand that Chamonix-Lyon is a regional train.

What station name do I select for Chamonix train station? There are few names that appear in the drop down list.

Kind regards,

Yes, it is called "carte d'hôte" and it is valid in the valley:

"Do we buy train tickets in advance to get discount? Do kids get discount on regional trains"
There are no discounts on regional trains, it is not necessary to buy tickets in advance. Kids under 3 travel for free, there are discounts for kids 4 to 11 and 12-25.

"What station name do I select for Chamonix train station?"
It depends on your location in the village. I would ask your hotel.

Most of your questions have already been answered in replies to your previous threads.
The train ride from Chamonix Mont Blanc to Lyon Part Dieu implicates 2-3 changes and costs 43 EUR for every adult.

Thanks Pvoyageuse and Neckervd for quick revert.

Any must eats / grocery stores in the town Center. Does Chamonix have a farmers market? We love to try the local dishes and other eats like picnic stuff.

Any local info to make the trip special. This is our first trip to France.

Any short walk in the gorges? Do you recommend a day trip to Annecy?

Kind regards,

There is a Super U grocery store right in the town center, and a big Saturday market.

My family was in full tourist mode while there last June, and since it was cool enough, we wanted to have some fondue and raclette. We weren't disappointed.

I think a day trip to Annecy is a good idea; we enjoyed our day there.

On your ride to Lyon, you will have to change trains at Annecy anyway. You may stop over there for a few hrs.
