PANORAMIC EXPRESS- Switzerland- Is reservation compulsory for a family?

We are a family of 2 adults and 2 kids, travelling on Swissrail pass, on May 13th 2010. ( which is a public holiday in Switzerland)
We are planning to take the train from Montreux @ 9.45am to Spiez via Zweisimmen; which is the golden pass route. The SBB site says :
Groups reservations compulsary ( GR),
GROUPS supplimentary charge ( GZ),
and Reservation recommended( RE).

Is the family considered as a Group? Is it possible to board this route without reservations? I am not very clear...

Can Switzerland Experts help...?

A group is 10 and more persons.

Thanks a lot.
I assume that reservation is not compulsory for my family.

If you are going on a holiday you may find the train very crowded - and while reservations may not be mandatory you may have trouble finding seats all together if you don't reserve in advance.

Hi Paragkash,

Also, if you want to sit at one of the large, panoramic windows, you should make reservations for that.

Have fun!

We [DH and I] have travelled that route in the opposite direction, twice. The second time we wanted to sit right at the front [ie panoramic window, over the driver], and booked several months ahead. I would definitely book ahead.
