Pancakes in Amsterdam?
Am I missing something in translation? Someone told me I had to have pancakes in Ams? are they special there? If so, where is the best place to get them!!!
I know, I am posting a lot - I apologize. This is a last minute weekend trip because flights are so cheap!!! |
Pancakes are very popular here, and not served with lemon and sugar, but with all sorts of sweet or savoury topiings. Even with the savoury topping you should drizzle a little stroop over it.
The pancake bakery on Prinsengracht is a well known place. http://www.pancake.nl/ |

Kind of a thicker 'crepe' but laid out flat on the plat with whatever toppings you ordered... and as large as the plate! |

******* What's stroop? |

My partner and I had lunch at the recommended Pancake Bakery. It does have a nice location right on a canal. The “pancakes” we ordered were similar to crepes with meat, vegetables and ect. It was quite pricy for what you got. We thought the savory style crepes in Paris were comparable and not as expensive.

Stroop = Syrup - thick almost treacle like stuff, usually in a bottle or pot on the table in a pancake house. Not overly sweet so it goes well with savouries too.

The Pancake bakery is expensive, because of it's postition and it's aimed at tourists. They are about €2.00 more expensive per pancake than our local place. But at least you don't need to eat again in a hurry!

thank you, everyone!!!
on more question, Hetismij, did you recommend the more expensive touristy place or the cheaper local place in you link? i clinked your link and see it is also called pancake bakery . . . i would rather visit the local, less touristy place! |
We loved our pannekoeken in the 1e Klas cafe in Amsterdam's Centraal Station. We sat on the pub side and enjoyed a delightful meal. Even if you don't eat there, make sure to pop in and check out the room (former first class lounge) to imagine travel in a bygone era.

The Pancake Bakery is the expensive one. There are plenty of other places to get pancakes in Amsterdam it's just that that is the best known one in probably the nicest spot.
I can't recommend one as I don't live in Amsterdam, - my local one is a train ride away from Amsterdam. You could try cageym's suggestion. Pancakes are never very cheap, but they are very filling. |
