Palermo, Sicily - practical questions

I'm finalizing my plans for my Sicily trip and have a few logistical questions about Palermo. I only have two days there, and want to do a half day trip to Cefalu so need to maximize my sightseeing in Palermo. From my map it looks like it's only about a mile from the harbor to the cathedral and less than that from the cathedral to the cappuccini crypt. That seems very walkable to me but I keep reading about taking buses to get to the crypts, etc. I'm trying to get a sense of how large the central area is. Thanks

If you can, save some time to visit Monreale. Its so beautiful and one of my most favorite Sicily sights.

You may not spend that much time in the crypts, it creeped out even my husband and my dad. When they got to the babies my husband just said "I'll meet you outside".

You will love Sicily. Enjoy! Eat some for me!

isabel -- You may be surprised at how actual street mileage translates on your feet. I did a fair amount of walking in Palermo last month, and had I chosen to visit the crypts, I would have taken a bus. Best option might be to have the bus info with you in case you decide once you get there that your feet/back need a rest and would enjoy a ride back to the hotel. Enjoy Sicily!

PJI -I do plan to visit Monrale. I was thinking we'd go there on our way out of Palermo. We pick up the rental car the third day and I was going to stop in Monrale on the way to Segesta which is our next stop. Does that sound like a reasonable idea?

How much time did you spend in the crypts? I have heard they are pretty creepy but we'd just like to check them out.

I'm glad to hear the central area is walkable. It does look like that on the map and I am used to walking quite a bit when in cities, just wanted to make sure I was planning things right. Thanks

Sounds fine. Just be sure to see it if you can. I also love Segesta! Then again, I just about loved everything about Sicliy so I guess I'm biased.

Can't say we were in the crypts more than 15-20 minutes. Like they say "once you seen one hay stuffed skeleton, you seen um' all". My hubby was outta there in about 10!
