Has anyone stayed in a room that had a "courtyard" view? Or does anyone know how I might find photos of the rooms with that view? I've looked on various websites and see photos only of the water views. Thanks.

I am assuming this is a hotel in Venice. Have you asked the hotel to send you photos? Did you check tripadvisor for reviewer photos?

Yes, yes, and yes. But neither site has photos of the courtyard (which is the only category we'd be able to afford, plus I don't want the noise from water views anyway-- but I do want to know what the courtyard looks like.)

Did you email the hotel directly and ask for the photos or just try to find the photos on their website. I would email them and ask, if you have not already done so. If the hotel won't send you photos of the courtyard view (a simple request), perhaps you should try another hotel.

Hotels do not typically highlight their cheaper rooms---I would assume a lousy view. Heer is a bunch of pics:

Hotel says they don't have photos of courtyard. Perhaps I will look elsewhere, but the hotel seems quite lovely.
bob: I don't agree that courtyard views are necessarily "lousy." I often prefer them to any other view, and I definitely would prefer it to a water view in Venice (more tranquil).
But I agree that it's a little suspect that no view of courtyard is shown on any of the photo galleries I've looked at.

Sorry, can't help you out with the courtyard view question, but we did stay at the hotel in one of the water view rooms. We really loved the hotel, the room was great, very big by European and Venice standards. I understand the rooms are all pretty similar, other than views. And while it was great to have that water view we really were not in the room all that much during the day. I'd have no problems staying there again regardless of the view. Good luck.

Do any of you know the Ca' Lucatello next door? Now it seems that we may be given a room in that building instead. I thought I'd gotten a reasonable rate for Sant'Angelo; now it seems as if it's kind of bait and switch.

I'm sure it has been mentioned before, but you know, it is only 2 nights - I would be looking for a hotel room that has the easiest in and out for you and your luggage, and ease to the cruise ship. I know from your previous threads that you and your DH want/need a large bed and a quiet room, but it really seems like you are not going to be able to have everything. Does your cruise line not offer a pre-cruise hotel option? So much of Venice is charming and old world, as it should be, but it is also not always easy (you know, cobblestones and narrow passageways, getting luggage over bridges if not able to arrive by boat, that kind of thing). I do wish you luck, but I worry about how much time you are spending on this. But if the challenge is part of your vacation planning, then ignore me and good luck.

Thanks for your thoughtful, non-accusatory response. You're no doubt right, of course, but for us a hotel can make a big difference in our pleasure when traveling. I do tend to overdo the planning, but we're virtually always delighted with the choice.
I'd absolutely love to just go with the cruise line's hotel, but it's practically double the cost of doing it on our own (including figuring in the water taxis, etc.) Even so I'd go along for convenience sake (at our age, convenience is worth a lot), but the hotel this time seems just so blah: Venice Continental. Somehow can't get my head around spending $700-800 per night for a hotel that gets so many turn-off reviews.

i looked at the link given by bob and that's quite an expensive hotel - even in Venice you ought to have plenty of choice in that price-range.

forgive me if i am teaching my granny to suck eggs, but have you tried Trip advisor for your dates [sorry i don't know what they are or I'd have done it myself, out of curiosity] - then using the hotel booking websites to do some comparisons?

it's bit time-consuming but it's a reasonable way of finding what's available in your price-range for your dates. then you can see what you can get that fulfils your criteria more closely.

I was thinking that would be the situation with the cruise line hotel choice, definitely a big ouch, and I would not do it either. Best wishes as your search continues. I am just beginning the planning for our spring trip which includes several nights in Venice; prices are really higher than our last trip there, we are thinking apartment this time.

I'm thinking maybe Al Ponte Mocenigo now. Certainly gets rave reviews on TA. Clearly a few steps down from Sant'Angelo, but a whole lot less expensive. And I've got Starwood points that I could presumably use at the Westin, but it doesn't sound all that great.

Is the Westin hotel you're considering the Europa and Regina? When we were in Venice last year after our Mariner cruise (when we stayed at Al Ponte Mocenigo) , a couple we met on the cruise was staying at the Europa and Regina using points. They really liked it. It has a very good location.

Actually, hotel prices in summer are lower than in spring (dont know if that's why you wish you were going in Spring).

Hi cruiseluv-- you're a dear to pop in now and then (and believe me, I know I'm being a big nuisance; I am almost pathological about planning, in large part bec. my husband doesn't so much enjoy traveling anymore and I want these things to be as lovely as possible so that he won't give up altogether)

Yup-- that's the Westin I'm thinking about. It'll be either that or Al Ponte. Spring: Because the weather would be better (presumably). Summer is when it's better for us to cruise, but oh, the Med in summer-- it can be hellish. I carried a squirt water fan with me everywhere last time. Actually helped a bit.

Just learned that Venice Westin will not guarantee non-smoking rooms except for the highest category. There goes that. (Seems to me to be a way of milking North Americans?)

Well, that sort of stinks, doesn't it? It seems so backward to not guarantee nonsmoking rooms, but I guess it's a different world. It would sort of tick me off, but I don't think it has anything to do with milking North Americans; just milking their points customers.
