palais ideal du facteur cheval

This looks like a real fantasy place and intrigues me. Has anyone been there? Is it worth a detour on the way from Lourmarin to Annecy?

ttt-has anyone visited this place?

My response would be, yes, definitely. We visited Hauterives on our way from Grenoble to Avignon and it was a modest detour through rather attractive countryside. Once there, the palais is well worth seeing.

It looks pretty wild. And the story is weird. It's the type of quirky thing I would go out of my way for. If you're taking the autoroute to Annecy I would make the short detour. But please report back on this palace! I'd be interested in hearing more about it.

I have seen a show about this on French TV and it looked interesting. I think it is well worth it if you are interested in the strange and curious.

Will someone please tell us just what this is?

ita May 15th, 2004 06:09 PM

I really rely on Underhill for his knowledge of France and I am glad to reciprocate on this one thing. I think it is a fantastical palace(all different architecture) built by Postman Ferdinand Cheval from pebbles gathered on his daily rounds. A friend who lived in France told me about it. The website is:www.aricie.fr/facteur-cheval . I sometimes have difficulty accessing it. On google you can find lots of pictures.
