Pairs, please help with inexpensive Hotel
 

With the dollar being so weak does anyone have a good recommendation for a hotel in Paris for 2 adults. I would like it in a good location, clean and with a bathroom. Nothing fancy. Is there anything like that where it would cost me under $160 per night.

I found a place called Hotel Republique with rates of 88 Euros for a room, just wondering if that would be a good hotel. Any recommendation? We're not going until 2009 so we can make the reservation way ahead of time if needed.

If you do a search here you will find many recommendations. Your is a common question, so there are many threads on this topic.

I'll beat Ira to it and recommend Bonaparte, his favorite. If you want basic, the Timhotel chain with multiple locations would fit the bill. I stayed at the Jardin des PLantes location

One of the favorite budget hotels here is Hotel Monge, in the 5th near Panthéon and Rue Mouffetard. I read here recently they raised their rates but still would be about your maximum budegt. They have air-con, rare for 2* hotels. Have stayed there 3 times in summer. Rooms were fine with clean bathroom.

Or consider Ibis 2* chains e.g. near Bastille (4th). There are 3 in Bastille area. Maybe not as central as 5th or 6th but still well within the center of Paris. They are usually under €80, sometimes they give special rates on ther site and I have paid once as low as €49 in summer. They also have air-con, if it matters.

I have no idea however if those hotels can take a reservation for 2009 ???

Apparently Hotel Monge has been renovated, given a new name, and is under new management.

I just looked at Hotel Monge and it looks very nice but it's a 135 Euros, which would be $214 US, YIKES!

I don't need to make the reservation early, I just thought if it was a realy popular hotel I should make it a least 6 months ahead of time to make sure I get the room.

Someone posted the Familia Hotel a few days ago and it looked so nice I saved it.

Excellent Latin Quarter location, very near the Sorbonne.

The Hotel Champ de Mars offers a double with bath for 90 euros.

It's very clean, has a lift and it's a great deal. It's also hugely popular and often is booked well in advance.

PS. I have also stayed at the Familia (linked above) in the 5th arr., and that's a great deal also.

Hotel-du-Champ-de-Mars looks like a good deal for the money. Hotel Familia is more expensive.
I also looked at Hotel El Dorado, that looked nice but unfortunately no TV. My husband would not be happy.

Any more ideas are welcome or should I just go for Hotel-du-Champ-de-Mars, maybe that's the best my my dollar.

Finding a cheap hotel is never a problem in Paris -- it is the 3rd cheapest city in Europe for 1 and 2 star hotels.

It is also the most expensive city in Europe for luxury hotels. Don't cross that line.

Well, you're right, there seems to be a lot of cheap hotels but I'm asking for help because I don't want to end up in a dump and a place that's not a good location. I've never been to Paris so I thought this web could help me with this.

What are you hoping to see on TV?

On our recent European trips, we have had CNN at all hotels, and BBC at some, and that was it for English channels. But we quickly tired of CNN, because they keep repeating the same things over and over again.

When I once stayed at a 4* hotel in Paris, it had a really good selection of channels in many languages, but it was no better for English.

So if you want a hotel with a TV with a good English-language selection, you'd probably have to book at a 4*+ hotel that specifically catered to this market. And I'm pretty sure I have also stayed at hotels that had *no* English-language offerings on TV.

Now I am obliged to wonder what is a 'not good' location according to you. There are lots of hotels in the center of the city for various prices, and then there are various hotels in other neighborhoods for maybe 30% less but which require perhaps 15 minutes on the metro to reach the center. Is this acceptable or not? (Keep in mind that these 'outlying' locations also have cafés, restaurants and shopping for lower rates than the center of the city.)

I'm sorry. I should also mention that what I have in mind costs less than $100, so if you are willing to pay up to $150 you might as well stay closer to the center.

First of all, what do I expect to see on TV, I personally do not care if there's a TV or not but my husband always says that he at least wants CNN so I can oblige him on this, he doesn't really ask for anything else.

When I say a good location, I'm a tourist and I want everything close. I know it's probably a lot cheaper out of the centre but I want to be close to the tourist sights even though I'm sure we'll still be taking the bus and metro.

Stayed solo here for a week last May at E85 a night, and enjoyed it and the neighbourhood.

If you get a cheapish hotel, it might not have CNN in English, so be sure to check on that.

We're staying at the Grand Hotel des Balcons from the 6th through the 12th. Don't know if they have any vacancies, but I've only heard good things about them. We've stayed at the Hotel Port Royale, the Familia, the Motte Piquet, the Grand hotel Leveque and the Champ des Mars without complaint. Our son stayed at an Ibis on a last minute trip. The idea of a web booking service sounds practical.

I suggest staying in the 4th, 5th or 6th arronds.

In addition to the suggestions here, look up the hotels at www.venere.com.

Look for reviews of the ones you like at www.tripadvisor.com.

You will not be able to book hotels for 2009 until Nov or Dec of this year.

Le Sevigne has a great location in the Marais - my parents have stayed there and found it fine. It's cheap, clean and safe but the rooms facing the street can be a bit noisy. Don't know about the availability of CNN though!

We have stayed at the Hotel Beaugrenelle Saint-Charles and loved its charm. Rooms are small but its a very comfortable and clean hotel in a nice location. Friendly staff. Should be within your budget.

We are staying in the Hotel Eugenie in May of this year (http://www.eugenie-paris-hotel.com/). Obviously we haven't stayed there yet, but we found many good reviews on Fodors as well as Tripadvisor (that site is really invaluable, by the way). We're paying 110 euros/night, which is just slightly above your budget range, though at a different time of year the price might be lower. It's very central, right near the Saint Michel Metro/RER station. So far the staff has been very friendly. I know they have TVs in the rooms, though I don't know for sure about CNN.

Hopefully I'll get my act together to post a trip review after we go so I can offer more firsthand insight!

we booked an apartment in paris over xmas in the 7th- great locale, well appointed, great breakfast bought at the nearby patisseries and fruit market- very inexpensive and much roomier than a hotel

we use vacation in paris and found the process easy and professional

Just thought, the Chopin probably doesn't have CNN. It's sister hotel, the Hotel Bretonnerie, has satellite TV in its rooms, but is a more expensive 3*. You've got time to check out the channels and shop around for a deal.

Parisonmyminds, you've been to several hotels, which one was your favorite hotel for the hotel and location? I looked on Venere and one could go crazy with the variety of hotels. On Venere my original hotel pick is only 89 euros for a double room, I don't see that there's a charge to make the reservation on Venere.

Suze: I like the Hôtel du Collège de France. 97€ for a double room. Some rooms have a balcony with table and chairs. Great location.

I'd also like to know why a different hotel everytime, she must not have been very impressed with the previous stays.

I've been looking around for a real bargain with satellite TV. The following link might be worth considering, but I've never stayed there.

I don't know why a person can't stay at a different hotel each time, just like people enjoy trying a new restaurant each time.

Sometimes the hotel that is inexpensive on one trip is not inexpensive on the next trip. Also, Paris has so many varied areas that you get a completely different feel by changing hotels each time.
