Paddington Bear

Anybody know how much a Paddington Bear would cost in London? And where is the cheapest place to find one? Thanks!! Thinking Christmas gifts for kids....

Hi Luv,

You can get Paddington Bears online at www.amazon.com for as little as $7.99. This might not be something that will be a unique, London gift.

It cost me 21 pounds last October. I looked all over England and could not find one until we got to Heathrow to fly home. You might be able to find them somewhere else, but at least I did not have to carry it around with me for two weeks.

Harrods is full of all sizes of Paddington bears and I think they might be the more expensive ones.

My wife got hers at Paddington Station. There is a wagon-type kiosk there with all types of Paddington Bear items.

Theey are all over in all price ranges - cost depends on size, if if it is British made, if it has removable rubber wellies, if the hat is separate or sew no and many other feature.

You can spend from about £3 to over £100 - so you need to know waht you are looking for. Best selection is probably at Hamleys followed by Harrods - but you can find them everywhere.

And if you are thinking of buying at Harrods, I have found that if you buy the same items at the airport tax free shop, you save that 17% or so tax that is talked about. The same with the Harrods bags which are so nice to own. Good luck. Halfpint

Thank you, thank you everyone! I, of course, have to buy them over there. At it is good to know there are some differences. I am planning on looking at them on the way out of the airport. That way I can see the difference in cost from there, Paddington, and Harrod's. By the way, what are "wellies"?
Thank you everyone. Only 5 weeks to go!!

wellies = wellington boots (plastic galoshes?) not sure why Paddington wears them as I don't recall them in the books.

Luv2Travel, you won't be able to check the prices when you arrive at Heathrow.
The duty free shops are in the departure area.

Luv:
If you take the Heathrow Express from the airport, you can check out the Paddingtons when you arrive at Paddington Station. You might also want to take a photo of the statue of Paddington there.
Unfortunately, Paddington has become almost as ubiquitous as Gap stores and Burger Kings. If you want to bring back bears uniue to England, consider the Harrod's range -- all signed on the foot and available from affordable to extravagant, or some of the bears dressed as bobbies, Beefeaters, Life Guards or Henry VIII.

Looking for teddies is the only bear hunting of which I approve.

I remember my first visit to Hamley's when I was 6. It's an amazing toy store. I don't doubt that they have the best selection

Paddington Station of course, and I recall a shop near Piccadilly Circus which had a ton - including one bigger than me! walk from Green Park Tube, up towards Piccadilly. (help me out, what is the street name?) anyway, a good walk and lots of shops.

flygirl Aug 11th, 2003 11:11 AM

duh - the street name IS Piccadilly. there you have it.

VCL:
Who has their signature on the bottom of the bears foot? Just curious. Does that make it more of a collector's item?

vcl Aug 11th, 2003 01:40 PM

It's the Harrod's logo, embroidered. Value, who knows. In our family a genuine Harrod's bear is a promise that when you're old enough, Grandma will take you to tea there.
