Packing light -what about CinqueTerre hike?
 

Husband and wife (50yr.olds) will be in Italy for 3 weeks and are taking one 22" case each. Just realized our light-comfy-non-wrinkle packing may not be good for hiking CinqueTerre. Will it be to cold for shorts-jeans are out-so what to pack/wear? Thanks!!

Just returned from the Cinque Terre last week. I'd pack some light cotton shorts, t-shirt and hiking boots. It was quit warm during the day, as in the mid 80's. It's a hike to be taken seriously. We saw some women on the path that were crying, seriously. They were obviously unprepared for it. Also, the Cinque Terre gets very cool at night so pack a sweater or sweatshirt. It's a beautiful area that we wish we would have been able to spend more time at. Make sure you eat some of the pesto sauces around there. Pesto originated in the Cinque Terre so they do it up right.

The walk between Riomaggiore and Manarola is flat and paved - you can do it in sandals if you want. The other parts of the walk are unpaved and up and down so you need non-slip, comfortable walking shoes. It can get quite warm doing the walking so I'd wear layers, we also found the weather in that area quite changeable so take a light rainjacket, also a bottle of water. If you are reasonably fit and used to hiking, you won't find it difficult. The views are wonderful, particulary the walk FROM Corniglia TO Vernazza. The Manarola/Corniglia section was closed due to a landslide when we were there, apparently a common occurence.<BR>Kay

We are also going to CT leaving the 4th of Oct.should we pack with shorts?What's this we hear not to bring a fanny pack, what's up with that?

My husband and I were in Cinque Terre the first week of October last year. We didn't bring shorts, and we ended up buying an inexpensive pair to hike in. The temperatures were in the 80s during the day. We used the shorts for hiking and wore our lightweight pants in the evening.<BR><BR>We are also in our 50's and managed to do all the hikes. Some of them were quite strenuous, but I never felt like crying as one post mentioned. Just take your time and stop often to rest when you need it. You'll have a wonderful time there. It is a magical place!

For Jo, I think the negativity around fanny packs is not so much around hiking but for everday use. Yes, they are a bit nerdy and easy for pickpockets to get at if worn in back.<BR><BR>If nerdy doesn't bother you then go for it.

I am leaving for CT next week also and need to know what to pack. 80s in October, can that be right?
