He's at University of Newcastle through the AustraLearn program. He is having a great time so far-they were taken up to the Cairns region (Great Barrier Reef) for a week before the start of the semester, then he and friends have been down to Sydney on weekends. In a week he will be on break and he and friends are doing a week in New Zealand (on a tour).
Were you near Newcastle?

On shoes--they have dark brown sketcher style shoes that are a cross between tennis shoes and dress shoes--they look a little like a bowling shoe--stylish here and he wears them with khakis when he's in casual khakis now. Both boys wear "clean cut jock" style clothing normally--they could care less what I pack as long as fits in that mode. They're extremely low maintenance, but they're always well dressed.>>
huskermom- I haven't read all this but this paragraph by you made me smile - halfway through our recent trip to Rome, i discovered that my DS, aged 19 [yes, that's right, he's supposed to be an adult] had no useable footwear whatsoever. both pairs of shoes he'd brought with him had fallen to bits. i became aware of this as when we were walking along, i could hear and see the soles of his shoes slapping against the uppers. I had literally to drag him into the nearest shoe-shop and force him to let me buy him new pair. Then i was on a roll and i made him buy two MORE pairs.
sadly he is neither low-maintenance [not sure I know what that means i the context of teenage boys, anyway] nor well-dressed. But he is now well-shod.

annhig--LOL!! That will be my youngest son...
Ignutah--I stayed in a little town near the New South Wales/Victoria border (south of Sydney and Canberra) called Bega--it's in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. My host family had a beach house in a tiny little resort town on the coast called Tathra--it was so beautiful--I got to spend most of the summer there. Newcastle is on the other side of Sydney, but I've traveled through it a couple of times. I took the same trip your son took--up the coast to Cairns. I hope he got to snorkle and try out the surfing . I'm betting he had the time of his life--it's an amazing area. I love Australia, but I did a short trip to NZ as well--the south island is the most beautiful place I've ever been. What a wonderful experience! The Aussie people are really open and friendly--it's a great country.
