packing for late April/May
We are a family of four (kids 10,13) going to Italy Aripl 24 - May 5. We want to pack as lightly as possible. Any suggestions on what to pack? Should we pack for warm or cold. We are going to Rome, Venice then to Sorrento.

Warm, but not hot, with the occasional cool (but not cold).
Where are you from? You will encounter weather similar to Virginia, Missouri or central California (all three of these have 20-30 degree spreads almost daily, of course - - as does Italy). See weatherbase.com or worldclimate.com for precise statistics. Best wishes, Rex |
Thanks mnatella for this post. I'll be in Rome Venice and Tuscany the same time as you and was wondering the same thing. I'm from Florida and am usually cold if it's below 75 degrees F. So I guess I should plan to bring a light coat or sweater?
TIA, Allison |
I'm from Florida too, and have been wondering the same thing. I'm in South Florida and we break out our sweaters when the temperature hits 70. My husband and I are going in mid-May. I was told by a friend who lives in Milan that Venice is humid.

Hi,
My lady wife takes a denim jacket to wear over a light sweater and and a wool shawl. She hasn't yet had to wear all three at once. |
Dress in layers. Wear a lightweight sport coat or windbreaker over a sweater in the morning. Throw the sweater in a shopping bag when you stop for lunch. Buy your umbrellas when you get there.

Last year we spent the last week of April and first week of May in Rome, Positano, Florence and Venice.
The first 3 days were in Rome and I definitely needed a sweater or light jacket. Dressing in layers is key. Sorrento will be warmer but at night you will still want a sweater. Venice actually was quite hot during the day but this was the first week of May. |
