Best sunset view

Where is the best sunset view in Santorini? I have heard a lot about Imerovigli and Oia but cannot choose without knowing the one that will give me the best pictures for my camera. Any suggestions welcome. Thank you guys!

It is said that the best sunset view is from the castle of Oia (http://www.oia-santorini.net/oia-sunset.html ). Yet, I have to let you know that a lot of people gather there during the evenings in order to see the sunset, so it might be a little bit…crowdy. In any case you will have the chance to take great photos. Keep in mind that Imerovigli is also a great point for sunset views!

Maybe I'm the odd one out, but IMO the best sunset view is facing away from the sun, watching the colors change on the whitewashed buildings along the caldera rim. ;-)

The castle of Oia - and all around it - is a wonderful view and yes there are lots of people around but it's not necessarily a bad thing. There was a definite party atmosphere. We had nice conversations with lots of people waiting for the sunset. One guy asked his girlfriend to marry him and then a couple hundred strangers all applauded and it was a lot of fun. You get great shots of the sunset itself and of the town in both directions. We almost didn't go at sunset as I had heard so much about the crowds but I'm glad we did. However, I actually thing I like the view better from Fira.

Here are a couple shots you can compare:

If it is your intention to photograph the sea and sun then it doesn't matter if there are a lot of people around the vista point at the old castle in Oia since they won't be in your shots. You can also walk partway down the steps from the old castle towards Amoudi Bay. Most people stay up on top and don't bother going down those steps very far. If you want to include buildings and parts of the surrounding villages in your photos then it becomes more of a challenge. I think one of the best locations for sunset photos in Oia would be at the beginning of the hiking path between Oia and Fira. From up there you can choose to have the whole village in your foreground with all the colors changing as the sun gets lower in the sky. To reach this location you will have to walk out of Oia on the main road past Perivolas Villas and find the trail from the far side of the desalination plant that leads up to the start of the cliffside path to Fira. From the desalination plant to the trailhead will take about 15 minutes to walk.
