Oviedo, Aviles or Gijon

We are driving through Asturias and would like to visit these towns. If we were to stay overnight in one of the three, which one would be the best choice? Thanks!

Hi WALKERLUCAS,

I have only stayed in one of these town - OVIEDO, and I thought it was charming, especially the old square.

Hard choice, I've been to all three and stayed a few nights in both Gijon and Oviedo.

I probably would recommend Gijon based on that it is on the water, has a very charming old town, some beautiful vantages from above the coast. There is also an outdoor museum which is quite well done and has cider, bagpipes and the biggest grill that I've seen! Adjacent to it is the largest 'market' I have seen selling everything, I mean everything, from tractors to pools to housewares to jewelry and everything in between with lots of places to eat.... I've never seen anything like it,

I also enjoyed Oviedo. The old town is not as interesting as Gijon IMO. But, there are a couple of very interesting 9th century sites close by.

I only stopped in Aviles for a few hours on my way from Gijon to Luarca. It was OK. Don't think I'd stay there. Did run into a small festival there on a Sunday afternoon in August

Luarca is a very sweet, small fishing village that I very much enjoyed for a night! Great views of everything from the tiny church on the cliffs above the town!

Here is a link to my photos from those areas, Oviedos, Gijon, Aviles probably start about 1/4 the way down. If you open in slideshow view, you can see the captions I've added. I've also put the town name on the first pic of each town.

I love Oviedo, but I would not want to drive into it for an overnight. It is not the easiest town to find your way around in. Maybe Gijon is no easier to get in and out of by car. But if it is I would go for Gijon

Taking the train or bus into Oviedo is easy peasy. Driving not so much.

I often go to Gijon because it's a nice place to spend a few days and always go to the same hotel next to the sea and near the center of the city.

I'm planning to stay in Oviedo. Does anyone have an idea of how much a taxi might cost to get to Gijon to walk around in the evening and maybe have dinner?

Any recommended restaurants in Gijon, or is it a great tapas/cider city?

You can check out La Pondala (www.lapondala.com), or Avant Gard Gastro (www.avant-garde.es) for a change of pace.

According to Pidetaxi (pidetaxi.es), the cost of going form Oviedo to Gijon would be about 36€, city center to city center. The trip will take about 25 minutes. Not bad! You can book ahead of time.
